Miseryguts Posted February 28, 2022 Report Share Posted February 28, 2022 Hi, amongst others, I reload 45C and 45-70 with a certain brand of Lead bullets, which are pre-lubed. In every box there are always some which have some or all of the lube missing from at least one lube groove, as per the phots attached. My question is: Does the missing sections of lube cause instability in the flight of the bullet, or is all the lube in all the grooves consumed during the passage of the bullet through the barrel??? Another thought, I always tumble these lead bullets with Alox as well,is that a good thing or does the layer of alox stop the lube in the grooves from being distributed in the barrel?? Popsbengo Posted February 28, 2022 Report Share Posted February 28, 2022 Although I'd quite like to add that to my long list of excuses for why I missed, I would think any lube left will be flung off by the spin. 😁 Alox maybe an overkill situation but I doubt it hurts - happy to be corrected though. terryh Posted February 28, 2022 Report Share Posted February 28, 2022 Not sure re missing or gaps in lube for smokeless ( which I’m assuming you are using with shop bought hard cast bullets) but if using with BP then full lube grooves are a must to stop the base of the bullet deforming. Bullets are cast around the 20:1 lead/tin where as bullets for smokeless can be, by and large, any old mix. The fully filled grooves (canulars ) will not compress so the base of the bullet stays sharp and ‘pops’ out of the barrel rather that farting out one side and inducing a wobble on hand snap shot of cast canular’ed and slick PP bullets all for 45 cal (.458”) BPCR’s , 45-70, 45-90’s etc. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
