nuttyspaniel
What do you use to fill your shooting bags? Ive just recieved a present from the states of a front and rear bag set, but they are unfilled!! I was thinking about either sand or the beads from a bean bag! What do you think or use? ejg223
If you have a plastic injection moulding or extrusion company in your area they might give you some plastic granulate which isn't as heavy as sand. We'd have tons of it here, just a bit far away. edi
6mmBR
Prewashed sand or grit for bird cages. Dave
Zaitsev
Ditto on the 'not germinating' bit. Have just dug my wheat bag out from under the spare wheel and its grown a green and yellow beard. A spot of gardening required then..... z
Guest Smeagle
Mate you need to fill the bag with a weighted material, it also has to be able to mould to the shape that is required and stay there. It also needs to be flexible. All the soft stuff like beads etc are basically no good. Neither is anything that will set solid. What you need is fine sand from a paving company the type that they use to dust pavers or paving sand, make sure it has no cement in it and is dry and clean. You an pick it up from a paving company or hardware store. Filling is a little tricky use the nossal from a silicon gun (unused) and a funnel. nuttyspaniel
Cheers Graham! A good tip with the silicon nozzle! I was planning on using 1 of the wifes funnels from the kitchen but your idea will stop me getting grief again!!!
Vermincinerator
For my rear bag and front rest bag, like Dave, i use bird cage sand its very fine, clean, dry, cheap and readily available. For my large front bag i stuffed it with corn-cob tumbling media, it compacts well, forms well, but does not have the weight of sand. Ian.
baldie
The very best stuff is zircon sand, that is used by the moulders in a foundry, its black, and very heavy indeed for its granular size, if you dont have a foundry handy, Stuart at north west custom parts will do it mail order i believe. The sand isnt dear, but the postage might be. ejg223
Unitec Ceramics in Stafford also make ZrO2 sand. Has a density of around 5.8g/ccm. You wouldn't want to lug that into the field. Good Idea Baldie, I've got loads of it. edi
nuttyspaniel
Ive got myself sand that is used for Chinchillas sand baths!! Very fine so it should get into every nook and corner, and cheap as chips around £2 for a 2 litre milk carton full of the stuff!! Guest 308Panther
Got one here too!... And while the dust may be cheap the rodent aint....They run about $450,here. We got ours as a gift...(like we needed another critter)from a friend of the kids that will purchase a critter and soon get tired of it so they give it away...They would ask the unsuspecting to watch the animal for a week while they went out of town.... The lil' sh+t had everyone here charmed so it was next to impossible to refuse it. And then the other person wouldnt answer the phone so we kinda got stuck with it. 308Panther
charly hunter
If you go to a toy shop you can buy the type of sand which is safe for kids to play in, so this is sterile and nothing will grow in it or out of it, you can dry it in the oven on some baking trays.......leave it wet and you can use the pot and pans to make sand castle on the kitchen floor
