Bewsh, well asked-does seem anomalous but here it is again-unlkely several misprints?

222rem Hornady 40 vmax BC .201 @ 3600 300 -6.2/12.6 AND 400 -19.9/24.5

222Fed Bal Tip 40g .218 @ 3450 300 -6.5/11.9 400 -20.4/23

222 Nosler Bal Tip 40g .221 @ 3350 300 -7/12.4 400 -21.9/24

223 Hornady 40vmax moly .200@ 3800 300 -5.5/11.9 400 -17.6/22.9

223 Fed Nos BT 40g .221 @ 3700 300 -8/10.8 400 -17.3/20.8

223 Black Hills 40g Nos BT @3600 300 -6.3/12.7 400 -20/24.7

223 40 G Blitz King .210 @ 3400 300 -7/12.9 400 -22/25.1

Of course,we don't always know test proceedures (and "even" chrono placement -ie distance from muzzle -can make a difference.Nor does every manufacturer test every batch....and so on...

....but the 222 value may be a tad optimistic,as BC alone doesn't seem the reason, nor velocity..and/or the the 223 one a little maybe a bit pessimistic -I've added the 400y data which might help resolve....?

Ball park point was really that there isn't a lot in it under 300y,and 400 is pretty iffy for drift errors for both.

Just voicing an opinion, but I'm struggling to see the need for another calibre to make 200 yd+ shots if you already have a .223? I can understand the need for something more than a .22rf (I have a .17hmr for just this, but as mentioned above it is only a 150yd gun and beset by the wind, even with good ammo).

Once you get beyond 200, surely the .223 is as good a shout as any if you already have it? If its a flatter/less wind affected calibre you want, then to my mind you are really asking what to replace the .223 with?

Towsey - the key questions are what do you want the rifle for - small vermin, fox, deer, target ? What is the nature of your permissions - geographically and boundaries etc ?

I deliberately have a .22LR (conditioned for vermin and fox) and a .223 in 1:12 twist (conditioned for vermin, fox, deer - muntie and CWD) after much consideration, advice and even a spreadsheet and having been there done that. I also have a HW100 in .177 which accounts for a ridiculous amount of vermin / #fun / I forget how effective an air rifle is !!

I had a blueprinted Remy .204 which for me was not a good experience. I have had three different brand .17HMR's and sold the last due to poor ammunition quality. I loved the round to 100 yards on fox and 175 on a still day for smaller vermin. OK so it catches the wind, but use fieldcraft to close the gap.

As Baldie states, a properly sorted .204 takes some beating.

I don't reload - which rules out .20 Tac / Prac / VarTarg / 20BR / 6PPC as I get .06 MOA three shot "groups" from a cold bore with .40gn Hornady V Max, 50gn Norma, 55 Hornady V max and 55gn Sako Gamehead which I use for Muntjac.

Other chaps have capably set out velocities etc but in lay terms, 22-250 was too bangy (and I typically do not have 300 metres of flat Fenland to shoot over and .243 too big - not favoured for smaller vermin by FEO and expensive / per shot.)

My current rifles, "in real life" hunting situations are perfectly acceptable for me. Both consistently accurate and humane. I will add a .308 (TBC) in the near future.

I am not shooting 100 rabbits a night with the .223 = £100 at retail prices three times a week = ouch.

I used the .17HMR for that and now the .22LR or air rifle. Even a .17 Hornet will set you back 55p / 75p round.

With my .223 I can shoot from 40 metres to 220 metres pretty much without changing my scope settings on fox. From my zero at 200 metres, I can dial up when requiring to shoot out to 300 / 350 metres - which frankly on many permissions is a long way !!

I have orders in with 5 RFD's for my preferred ("out of stock / have no idea when we'll get more") ,223 Hornady ammunition and that is with probably the most common CF out there. 17 Rem and 17 Hornet is (correct me) in limited supply. As for 17 Fireball forget it.

Good luck with your decision.

Except for the "can't use for deer" line the answer seems simple to me........... .204

I have a Tikka supervarmint and it is better than what I am. 39gr Sierra's with my 308 powder behind it so I can buy a big tub to share, N140, and everthing's good.

Cant use .20 cals on badgers either, best sticking to .223 if you want to remain within the law when shooting them
