terryh
H87 For the little I have done with stains I have found the Birchwood Casey products work well. I'd stick with one make of product. Take your time on the prep work, any scratch shows up. After staining the Tru-oil is a simple and effective sealer, put it on, let it dry, wire wool off and build up the coats. Deoendant on the wood you might need to fill the grain? Hope this helps? T
Davy
Take care with your choice of stain, some of the spirit based colours are easily lifted or muddied by spirit based finishes. A water based stain is a good alternative however it may lift the grain very slightly, this is easily sorted with some fine wire wool rubbed with the grain. I use Van Dyke crystals to darken woods, best to test on a scrap of similar wood first and wear some disposable gloves!
Andrew
The Finns used pine tar (veterinary supply) dissolved in turpentine. I've used it on some military rifle repairs with decent results.~Andrew
