Entry level night vision

Recommended Posts

We're interested in user opinion on the relative merits of entry level (circa £600) night vision kit, for example the Yukon Photon, VAMPIR CORE 3X and similar. It would probably be mounted to a pistol calibre carbine or a full bore rifle firing sub sonic ammunition, thus recoil isn't anticipated to be a problem. Target ranges would be from 50 to 150 yards.

Issues that we'd like information on would be:

Image clarity

Sighting adjustment range - the rounds we fire will be subsonic and thus have trajectories akin to a banana

Reticle type

Reliability

Battery life

Ruggedness

I know its a bit of talking point at the moment ref delivery as they are taking a long time to filter through to the UK, but have you considered the ATN X Sight?

At £649 for the 3-12x its just over your budget, but is packed with features and a 1080P sensor.

The first batch is en route to the UK as I type this, with the remainder of our order coming towards the end of the month, we will be clearing pre orders first then have free stock, unless you wish to place a £50 pre order deposit.

It offers full HD colour by day, and switchable to either traditional NV green or B&W digital night vision at night.

It has an array of user selectable reticles from aim point style through to mil dot, and is fine for centrefire calibre use.

Mr Badger.

I am sure we can sort out an evening at some point for you to come and have a 'play'

Curtosey of Scott Country I have a Pulsar N750, will soon have a PS28 and an ATN x - sight, you would be more than welcome to see them in action.

Hmmm, we weren't aware of the ATN, looks like it could be worth checking out. Our big fear is that having used some rather good military NV kit, both II and TI, we might find the entry level civvy kit somewhat lacking. That said, the military do pay way over the top for kit and modern consumer electronics are fast outpacing what was once very specialised kit.

Yes, the Arrow seems a good, no frills design and about what we'd expect for that price.

The ATN - X sounds too good to be true, and has feature we'll never need , for example, wi-fi, GPS tracking, video recording. Those must cost a certain amount of money to implement, which might otherwise have been spent on the basics - ie a rugged tube and optics. Ultimately, we want something that offers a nice clear view at night and is reliable : the ability to connect to Fartbook or Twatter we can do without. It may be a great piece of kit and our worries totally unfounded, but...

You could also check out the NT300 digital add on from nite tec, I have one of these units, good out to 300 yards on fox sized targets with a nm800ir, priced around £550 If you go on the "nightvision forum uk, Marky610 is the man to speak to.

+1 for the NT300 I've got one of these on my rimmy for rabbiting, very good piece of kit although I'm a bit disappointed with the battery life, mine lasted about 20 minutes until I connected it to a small battery pack now it lasts for days!

I think there could be a problem with your unit, When i first bought mine i did a review and posted it on here, from a full charge the battery lasted about 2hrs 45mins, I am charging mine up at the moment when it is full i will turn it on and see how long it lasts, I will let you know when i have done the test, If there is a problem with yours i am sure Mark will put it right, Top bloke.

Ive tried the NT300 and its a cracking bit of kit, however it is rear add on, so does alter your shooting position so never going to give you as good a performance as a dedicated unit, but for ease of use and the ingenious attachment its loads better than a lot of rear mounted options on the market.

You can contact Mark about the NT300 here

As for the Night Arrow 6x, there is a full review in Sporting Rifle in the January Issue which came out yesterday and Mike Powell gave it a rave review.

You can read Mike's review he did for our website here

http://www.scottcountry.co.uk/ATN-Night-Arrow-WPT-Night-Vision-Riflescope-Review-Mike-Powell-n1195.htm

In particular the White Phosphor and CGT options are brilliant value for money.

With the entry level model being £1299 for the Gen 2+ 6x Night Arrow, there is not a lot on the market comparable in price vs performance.

We have sold out of White Phosphor 6x twice now, and are down to our last few from the most recently delivery.

Regards

Hmmm, we think we'll haveto wait and see how the ATN-X performs when its been tested out in the wild. It seems a great price, and offers plenty of bells and whistles too. We may find we can ignore the bells and whistles if it is a sturdy, reliable bit of kit.

I've tried to find a similar thread on either this forum, or a similar some what inferior forum. I'll carry on searching. Anyway, it was a post on this similar forum, that pointed out to me, that the weight of the ATN X series is over 3lb's!!

Don't get me wrong, I'm most definitely "wowed" by the X series, but at over 3lb in weight, it does seem an awful lot for a scope! NV or otherwise....

Just a thought.

RE earlier post on NT300 battery life..... I done a test tonight, after 9mths use, a fully charged battery lasted 2hrs 9mins with screen brightness on full, and the recharge time was 1hr 12mins.

Can all the bells and whistles, ie the GPS, HD video, audio recording, wi-fi, Fartbook and Twatter connections and so on all be disabled such that they aren't draining battery power? I want a rugged bit of kit that will let me see in the dark and anything else is just superfluous rubbish.

Scenario 1.

We've just stalked up hill and down dale, through dense briar and brush, waded ikky marshland and finally, after three hours in the sleet, have a perfect trophy stag in our sights. We take careful aim, centre the cross hairs, slip off the safety, breathe out gently, take up the first pressure on the trigger and ...

*PING* You have mail...

Stag vanishes into the gloom at high speed...

Scenario 2.

"So, Mr Badger,"says PC Plod, "You claim you were at home on the night Farmer Giles met his end. However, your scope claims it was on a grassy knoll just a hundred yards from his front door..."

Ah, for that we'd have a GPS as back up and a proper map and compass too. Both silent, and neither detracting from the scope's primary purpose. We just can't see what useful purpose having access to Farcebook and GPS is on a scope. It's for scoping, from the Gk, skopein, to view. If we wanted to do other things, we'd carry the appropriate kit.

Scenario 4 - you crawl the last 50 yards through cow shite, nettles and remnants of dead pheasant a Red Kite has munched smelling awful. Set your rifle in a perfect shooting position....loll through said scope you can see its the most amazing 15 pointer with a amazing body and coat....there is a almost holy light emanating around it. You flick the safety off. The just before you take the shot.

Just an update for you, but ATN X Sights will be arriving this month, and we posted a thread on here earlier with details.

We will have some spare stock available but those are being ordered quickly.

Hi there,

Will you be at the shooting show with these in February, by any chance?

If not, will there be a representative from these, I could perhaps talk to, or maybe view the sights with?

Cheers. Paul
