Hi all

Looking to try some different powder as I can't get hold of any more Varget.

Any suggestions, 1/8 20" barrel using 105 Berger VLD's.

Cheers

Danny.

Personally I would opt for something a bit slower.

Try N140 or N150

Also N 540 and Reloader 15 are all good choices.

With an 8 twist and a heavier bullet these will do fine.

Cheers

Thanks Dave.

Have you used any Ramshot powder? Was told it was close to Varget.

Plus 1 there with N140

I use N135 with the 87gr vmax, and varget with the 105gr Amax

Sorry I've not had any experience with Ramshot powders.

At the moment due to the lack of Varget I'm running my 6BR on N150. I don't quite get the speed but the accuracy is exceptional.

I read about it on 6BR.com and how well the Yanks got in with it. I tried a bit and it works well.

Another powder which is readily available and was the next on my list to try is TR140 which is an N140 clone.

It's only £57 ish per kg only thing which stopped me was the success with N150

Cheers

Dave

As 6mmBR suggests, Viht N150 is the first port of call for Varget-less 6BR / 105 shooters. As lots of people get good results from N140 too, TR140 should also work well with 90s to 105s.

The nearest Ramshot equivalents to VarGet are TAC and Wild Boar, the latter the slightly slower burning of the pair. Both are very fine grained double-based ball powders and they burn cleaner than their US manufactured equivalents such as H. BL-C(2). They're also said to be pretty temperature tolerant. Despite Ramshot being a Western Powder Co. product range, they're manufactured by PB Clermont in Belgium and their propellants are widely used in military smallarms ammo worldwide.

I've yet to hear of anybody trying either in the BR, but I've had good results and very high MVs from the pair in .223 with heavies and .308 Win with 155s (like 2,900 fps plus from a 22-inch barrel Howa 1500 Varminter with Wild Boar!).

Another possibility of those powders that are available is Lovex S062, the former 'Accurate-4064'. It's also said we should get at least some supply of the Canadian manufactured IMR powders later this year in lieu of the non-appearing Hodgdon Asutralian manufactured extruded 'Extreme' powders. In that event, IMR-4895 is almost certainly a good choice for 6BR with heavies, and it can be loaded up a bit more heavily than the H-version of the 4895s within safe pressures. Like VarGet and H4895, it has a very high specific energy rating for a single-base powder, substantially higher than Viht N100 series equivalents, so will produce higher MVs all other things being equal.

There's just been a recent delivery of Vihtavouri powders so you shouldn't have any problems getting hold of N150.

Start at around 29 grains and work up as usual looking for pressure signs.

My accuracy load ended up at 30.5 grains with a 105 bullet.

Have fun shooting bug holes

Dave, What length barrel are you using with 30.5g of N150?

Chris

It's a 30" Bartlein 4 groove .236 bore barrel.

Velocity is a bit less than my normal match load of 30.4 grains of Varget with the same bullet.

I've not chrono'd this load yet but just judge by the fact that N150 requires an extra 3/4 MOA @ 600 yards.

Tried the N150 on the weekend. For some reason I started at 29.5, not 29 as suggested. The 5 round group was the best group I've had with this rifle so far but showed pressure signs so I'm going to drop down to 29.2.

Luckily I had Skany with me to point out my mistakes:)
