Wilson Die Blank Question

Recommended Posts

I have a Wilson Blank Seater die, which was ordered as a 7mm Blank

The pilot hole measures .3401"

Is this right ?

First time ive used Wilson Dies and by my reckoning its way oversize for my 7mm Pilots - even my 338 pilots arent really close enough to ream the chamber as I would like.

Ive got pilots that will fit the seater stem, but the reamer body wont engage this untill the chamber is 3/4 complete - which is no good.

Suggestions or help please..

Anyone got a 7mm seater Die blank they could measure ?

Think i'll just use a length of scrap 7mm barrel and make a new die from scratch.

Though long and hard and no way to ream the chamber without getting new pilot and I havent got time to spare.

You don't need a pilot Andy, just dial it in in a miniature version of an action truing fixture, then pre-drill and bore .015 under shoulder diameter..... The reamer can't go in any way other than straight and follow the bored hole.

Thanks Paddy

I wondered about that way but still couldnt get my head around the pilot "floating" in space.

I'll give it a go anyway, :)

Cheers Mark

While I accept if I ream the bore .015" undersize, (like I would for a chamber on a barrel), I think that the "bore" should be similar to the calibre size so one may use a piloted reamer (as in Newlon Die Blanks)

I'll give it a go anyway

Made a die out of a length of 284 barrel I had (scrap)

Turned parallel bettween centres,

Dialled in to 0 and reamed chamber full depth +015"

Face off using depth gauge and Go, to 0

Turned over, dialled to 0

Turned seater hole to fit seater (treackle slick fit)

Polished off,

Just tested it - Loaded rounds = 0 run out.....

Two hours work, but happy now.
