NXS on 1st focal plane

I had a call today from a friend. He bought an NXS a while ago from Sportsman and has been having a few issues with it shifting zero. When he called them today they told him that with a first focal plane if you zero on 10 x power and then zoom the scope in the zero will shift.

Is this correct or are they speaking crap ??. Never heard of this before.

Unadulterated crap.

FFP scopes by their nature do not change point of impact when zooming.

SFP scopes may change. FFP do not; it's simple mechanics based on where the rets sit in the 2 different designs.

So the normal NXS scope is that first or second ??. What plane is it that makes the cross hair larger as you zoom in ??.

Cannot speak for the actual scope your friend has got, but in regard to the question of 1st versus 2nd focal plane scopes: -

The centre aim point of any scope 1st or 2nd plane does not shift relative to the target regardless of the magnification, ie point of impact does not move if you change magnification. Or at least it should not!

But the secondary aim points on a reticle eg dots on a Mil dot or the secondary lines on a TDS reticle will change with a change in magnification, on a second focal plane scope. Just go to the swarovski ballistic program on their site and use a 6-24 scope example, and you will see the secondary lines on a TDS reticle represent different impact points at different magnifications.

The secondary aim points on a first focal plane scope will NOTchange with magnification.

Hope that hopes.

Sadly not surprised to hear the type of answer your friend got.

Regards

That's not strictly correct. The center aim point on a second focal plain will move in accordance with the machining tolerances of the scope when magnification is changed. It's a mechanical thing, not optical. All will do it. Some will be worse than others.

FFP scopes are not affected by this.

It sounds to me like he has the sfp because he mentioned something about second aim dot moving. Im away to see him this week so will find out more.

Thanks for the input
