For bag carry I use a clean bore snake for the odd emergency removal of mud or sand. Proper cleaning gets done with a Tipton carbon rod and bore guide.

Using a bore snake for the bag also negates carrying a bore guide too.

From those pics I would say no, not over pressured, the primer is still rounded at the corners and there is no cratering at the pin dent and no bolt face marks.

Compare to the bottom right (full pressure?); the primer fills the pocket more and the pin dent is shallower as the pressure is greater and there is some slight scraping by the N where it looks to have scraped on the bolt face.

Others may no more or better but this is just my opinion based on the evidence presented.

Hi, thanks for that, if I had looked at some of my other calibre cases, then I would have seen that! DOH!

All my cases end up with scrape marks on them due to tight ejector pins, I have to clean the brass off the bolt face after every shooting session, no matter what the loads

I use a 200 grn bullet and the powder you really want is trail boss

Trail Boss unavailable, Green Dot and Unique in my cupboard. Both are as fast as Trail boss, but are denser i.e 8gn of trail boss nearly fills the case, 8gn of Green dot is about 1cc, 8gn of Unique is about 0.8 cc - hence green dot! The 150gn RN were a really good price(FREE)

    Thanks for the feedback

  3. as per original post, hornady out of stock so got a sinclair to get some measurements before crashing in. On Hornady arriving today, redid measurements and found what I considered to be a big difference and just wondered if such a difference  was normal - obviously it is

  4. Hi, Am trying to develop a reasonably accurate (to 100-150 yards) sub sonic load for my 308.

Before someone jumps in and says WHY??. The answer is "because I can" ( and I like the thought of a silent 308 round around the barns)

So, trying small quantities of fast pistol powders with 150gn RN bullets as used in the good old USofA. All going well, nic(ish) groups, whisper quiet(with a Mod) at 1040 ish fps, till I looked at some spent cases.

Picture below. Does that look like over pressure?

The 2 case at left and centre are sub sonic (1050fps) rounds with 8gn Green Dot under a 150gn Bullet

The case at bottom right is a standard velocity (2750 fps) round with 44gn N540 under a 155gn bullet

  5. Hi, always used my Hornady comparator for determining CBTO, CBTL etc for my 223. Recently got into 308 win. reloading and could not get an Hornady 308 insert x stock, so went for a Sinclair.

Worked out all the figures for two or three bullet options. Today my Hornady comparator 308 win insert arrived, so I remeasured my parameters.

I expected some difference, but not of the magnitude that I got!

    Sierra 155gn HPBT loaded to 2.800 COAL, Hornady CBTO - 2.224; Sinclair CBTO - 2.087 (= 0.137 difference)

    Hornady 155gn ELD loaded to 2.810 COAL, Hornady CBTO - 2.183; Sinclair CBTO - 2.066 (= 0.0.117 difference)

That seems a big difference to my mind, or is that what one should expect??

Thanks again for all the advice.

Managed to clean up around 100 .338NM cases and two muzzle brakes. Some primer pockets were squeaky, some still a bit dirty but cleaner than with walnut media. Inside of necks were nice, very fine film of carbon left, so will definitely use some HbN before bullet seating.

The brakes came out nicely too. Couldn’t have done that in dry media, and saved me getting the old toothbrush out and scrubbing with Hoppes #9.

Everything dried off nicely in a cheap food dehydrator. Very handy, waaaaay less mess & faff than tumbling. And none of that horrid fine dust going everywhere. Really annoyed me having to wipe each piece of brass down in a towel to remove the fine walnut powder before sizing. Drove me nuts and my hands were always filthy.

    Happy days! 👍

Hi Catch, been following this thread with interest,as I too have become disenchanted with tumbling media and am looking to make life a bit simpler as I reload 5 calibres in all. So, which of the above recommendations did you go with in the end?

I like the thought of cleaning my moderators that way too!!

I love my Wildcat Evo on my Sauer .223 Varmint fluted barrel.  The threading is perfect, Alison Green at Wildcat is a star, and the engineering quality is sublime and the suppression much better than a couple of other mods I've tried.  Just a couple of thoughts

PS - no marking on the barrel

Plus 1 on all the above - plus they are UK made and designed. I have two on 223 and 308, and neither have given any problems that one often gets with other moderators. Very easy to strip and clean. Excellent suppression.

Using a mod on a rimfire and centrefire is usually discouraged on account of unburnt rimfire powder in the mod carrying the risk of been ignited when used on the centrefire.Never experienced it myself but have read threads warning about this.

OK thanks for the Heads up on that - some thing to ponder on

  9. Hi,

I have a Wild cat Evolution moderator, with 308 and 223 inserts and an 18x1mm threaded bridge which fits the barrels of my 223 and 308. I have two 22 rim fire rifles whose muzzles have 1/2-28 threads.

Any one know of some one who can make me a 1/2 -28 female to 18x1mm male adapter?? I think if I had one of these I could use my 223 moderator on the rim fires, thus saving the cost of another evo mod? - or am I barking up the wrong tree?

BTW before any one starts, I have moderators for all the rifles on my ticket

M (scratching his head in Monmouthshire)

  10. Hi JF, surely your previous loader gave you his load details? If so do you not know anyone who reloads who would make them up for you?

I reload for a friend who is nervous of reloading, but when he starts he will have all my info. BTW I am not touting for business, his payment means I get paid about £2 per hour for doing it!!

I think you are being very naive if you think your type of shooting will be fine so there is no need to support other shooting sports.

After Dunblane Lord Cullen recommended that there was no need for a pistol ban but it occurred with an exemption for target rimfires, then Tony Blair banned target rimfires. Now all shooting sports have been "left out" of the next Commonwealth Games. I see a pattern here even if you can't.

Sporting shooting can show a strong positive link with conservation, with wide reaching benefits for other species, particularly red listed avian species. As far as I can see there is little conservation benefit for pure target shooting and there is continuing pressure to eliminate all private gun ownership. Your branch of the sport might be fairly far along the list but when you are the target there will be no other shooters to support you and quite frankly I see little reason, after your  "I am alright Jack" attitude why anyone should.

    David.

    Plus 1 here for K's analysis -

During my lifetime I have seen many of my interests disappear _ as a boy and young man I followed Otter hounds. As I approached my majority I took up handguns. Then as my financial situation improved I was huntsman and master of a pack of Beagles. Injury forced the closure of that phase of my life so I took up Falconry which is still just about legal I think. Then more disability forced the closure of that phase. Then I went back to shooting and indulged in game shooting in the form of a small syndicate shoot on land where I rent the sporting rights. More disabilty closed that down too, so I am left with my rifles and a lot of memories  - for now.

My point is this - the attitude of "they will never stop my sport" has allowed the closure of: Otter Hunting, Handgun shooting, all sports with Hounds, , and is threatening the game shooting sport as it has never been threatened before, so the "I'm all right jack"  people in the target shooting world(which is the only shooting I can now do) really need to think carefully if they are really "all right" now.

If you can do them for £25 I’ll take them

sorry its cheaper to put them in the bin -  postage on this lot is just over 6 quid so my return for wrapping, driving 10 miles to the post office (and back) is 0

Never mind the time it took to clean, size, and trim.

In my naivety, I just thought that someone might be glad of some help getting decent brass

  13. Surely some one wants 300 223 cases for 28 quid????

You don't even have to size them or clean them, they are ready to load!
