Finman
Were I you, I would have asked the question omitting the 'Remington 700 model' bit Best wishes Finman
gbal
There are of course other makes, but if you are set on a Remington 700-not a bad choice,at all-then a heavy barrel has real advantages for rangework-they are generally more accurate, and remain so for longer (barrel heat up is slower).Which model/and desireable features depends a bit on budget. There will be opinions for/against the 700-if it's used, try before you buy,as for any used rifle..Asfor all relatively mass produced rifles, there are variations between otherwise 'identical' models-one reason opinions vary, even when based on some experience, though no one can own a reasonable sample of several makes,so generalisation can only be based on cumulative opinions-and they won't be very consistent! (because the rifles vary, within and between makers.Don't be misled either way by comments about wide range /not of after fit bits-very few make the base rifle/action shoot better, and you may not need or want any-and you should not need four different stocks-one maybe! Don't reject used rifles-especially if a model has features you wish-the 700 has been around in various guises for a long time-so if you must have a fluted stainless, barrel, and very ice they are,or laminate stock, and it's not in current production-it probably was,in an earlier model..... I like Sakos, have Tikkas and had several Rems too-and one 308 is among the most accurate rifles I have seen shot, from the box-but that includes other Rems! Any medium range rifle is something of a lottery,if you hope for an exceptional performer, but as a sensible sound club rifle, the 700s are contenders. God luck-you have to feel comfortable with your choice.
The Gun Pimp
Personally, I think a secondhand Remmy PSS in 308 is an excellent choice for a first rifle. You can usually pick one up for £6-700. Shoot it for a year - in F Class, tactical, benchrest - decide what you really want to do, sell it for what you paid for it.

As well as a custom rifle I have a PSS in .223 Rem and think it's unbeatable for the price. Had it since 1997 or 98.
Shuggy
A 700 is very good for upgrading a bit at a time as funds allow; it's just what I did. However if I was starting over again I might choose a Tikka T3. However, if I was being really smart I would keep shooting the club guns, save up for another year and buy an AI AT. As for calibre; definitely .308.
