ejg223
Last week we had fantastic weather and I was hoping it would last till the weekend. Saturday morning we struck off early into the Kerry hills. My friend George had first choice of a spot as he had not shot a deer this season. Wind was a bit awkward and as Easterly is not the normal direction. Shortly before first light I changed position as I heard sika whistle further down the hill. A doe and a calf headed into the forest below me and I then spotted a spike. Once he was broadside I took a sitting shot at around 140yds high heart. He ran down towards the forest and I put another one in to him running as we didn't have a dog along. He never made it to the forest. Very little meat damage as the front legs where not hit, ribs were badly affected, both sides. Not much blood splash either, both entries were only 3" apart. Later on I tried to get George into a deer but after a while we split up so he could walk down hill and I took a long route back to the car higher up. I moved behind a small pine tree as cover and scanned a forest cutting... same spot I shot the fox two weeks ago, just heading opposite direction this time. A spike was looking my my direction, only his head peeking out over the grass at around 120yds. Pushed myself further into the tree and checked if the bullet path had a clear line, scope line wasn't but I could see enough and put the bullet below his chin. Not a pleasant site, no picture. Poor old George didn't see a deer. At least he could skin one After a coffee we skinned the deer at another farm. Once again I was delighted with the handling of the ultra light moderator. Also recently got a few things from Grovetec USA and put one of their backpack style gun slings on my rifle. They are really a great help when dragging the deer back to the road. Great weather, great day and some good meat. edi
brown dog
Thanks Edi - that sounds to have been one hell of a skilled second shot into the first beast. (That's also the smiliest, sunniest larder-work pic I've ever seen! )
ejg223
Don't know about skill...normally don't need a second round. This fella was tough, can't understand how he could run around 80yds with mush in the chest. Have a driven boar shoot coming up in Jan in Germany, bit worried about my shooting for that, might be better off with a shotgun/slugs. edi
