ejg223
Our deer season closes end of Feb, I had my last day today. What a lovely day it was. We headed off early to start at first light. We would not be used to having frost on the west coast and the lack of wind. At first all deer seemed to be tucked away in the forest and gave alarm calls when I passed at the forest edge. I headed for the hill, glad that I travelled light. View when the sun came up. Atlantic in the distance. After a while I made it to the top and stalked the forest edge. Ground was frozen and noisy. I spooked a sika that trotted off to the forest, I couldn't make out if it was a spike or not so I let it go. A bit further on three sika caught me out as they where sunning themselves in the rocks. They bounced off and I headed after them. Two hundred yards on I had a view of the three looking through some branches. They where about to bounce over a ridge again. This time I managed to find a gap between the branches and dropped the calf free-hand at around 100yds. 243 can also make a bit of a mess with a spinal shot. Got carried away gutting the sika and had it's head off before thinking of taking a pic. Anyway was very happy the way my new lightweight stock handles and the ease of carrying the remmy. Drag back to the car was hefty. Needed to get down to bottom of the valley. Crossing the top also meant a bit of uphill. The deer was shot on the highest point of the hill on the right side of the clear patch. edi

ejg223
Thanks for the replies. Now it's back to foxing and general vermin. Might get a tikka 223 purely because I need to work on a T3 stock prototype Will a T3 varmint with its 1in 8 or 9 stabilise 75 a-max? hmmm edi
