Rifle choice, 22-250 or 223?

Recommended Posts

I use a cz 527 kevlar 223 and she's a tac diver, I use 52 amax running at 3250, I have also used 75gr a-max at 2850-2900, I tried lower speed for the 75's but it didnt like it too much.

some batches of 75 a-max worked and some didnt??????????????? maybe coz its a bit borderline of what the 9 twist will handle or maybe they were just a couple of bad boxes

never shot a munty or c/w yet though although I have shot plenty of impala over the pond with a 223 though they are a little big i think, a bit bigger than a roe

everytime I have had an impala in sight they look so small compared to other game (kinda roe size), then after shooting I always think to my self I should have used the 308

shot plenty of roe with a 308, 243 and 300 winnie but thats not much help either

can anyone answer whats a sensible speed for a 22-250 with 52-55 gr booooollets?

and what speed can they shoot say 60-69 gr?

you could down load 22/250 to 223 speeds but what is the point. take advantage of what its made for speed and had hitting

the 22/250 with a good mod like ase cqb is no louder then a 223 with same mod on.

as for a barrel burner you would be hard going shooting one out by just using it for vermin control.

even if the accuracy did drop off to what it was when new it would still group well enough to kill foxes.

its not so much the spped what kills the barrel its the constant shots down one on a range what does the damage.

when out foxing you mite come across one take a shot kill it. then mite not see one again for abit. so its not like your going to be shooting it red hot

223 is a cracking round and if you dont shoot over 200 or 300 yards at foxes get it. some people say get 243 but i was talking to a mate that shot 4 last night on his permission with 243.

and he said the range he had them at his 223 could have been up to the job at that range with half the powder charge per case

I run a .223 nowadays purely for the fun factor. Fox, small deer, vermin all within it's capabilities. Cow that which promotes growth and vigour, sheep that which promotes growth and vigour, horse that which promotes growth and vigour, lumps of muck, in fact anything that's safe make good practice targets with 33% less powder, a barrel that can often go to 8000 rounds or more, the chance to go hunting with an AR15.

The reduced cost is a big factor to consider, the savings encourage you to shoot more which in turn improves your ability all round.

Deer cals. can do everything as well as a 22-250 but none can load accurate, effective rounds as cheaply as .223, so that's as good a reason as any in my book.

If you don't include .220 Swift, 22-250 is still the outright top commonly available 22C/F perfomance wise, it's just getting too expensive to plink with any more.

Pete.
