After work

Had a rough week at work and opted for the 3D method,

(decide, delegate, disappear)

This farm has a realy nice view, and is overrun with

rabbits since they took the farmers guns away, he is

a bit of a character. After 43 rabbits I ran low on cheapy

ammo. That was in a bit over an hour, some hot mody.

Not long range, between 50 and maybe 220yds. Nice way to slowly say

good by to my 223, its just about sold.

Now the trouble starts again, new calibre? what rifle? custom? heavy or light?

Thanks for the replies so far,

it was just one of those weeks, my plane to

heathrow developed hydraulic problems as we

got to the runway. Then 8 hour delay, missed my

connection in heathrow, stayed the night 2 hour sleep.

Racing on the autobahn in Germany to arrive just in

time to give a presentation to around 300. I hate that.

Next night again 2 hour sleep and back to work in Ireland.

What I'm looking for in my next rifle, is a not to heavy

walkabout rifle, standard calibre possibly 22-250 or swift

might consider 243. I was thinking of a tight twist 22-250

to work the 55 - 75gr bullets. Is that a good idea??

Want to use it mainly for fox up to 400yds with a bit of wind.

I would have liked to try a remmy, cause i can make a stock

myself and learn while doing. Howa i think would be better,

but i wouldn't mind either way. So if someone has something

lying around or a doner action...

For deer I've got a 308 already, so I wouldn't need a dual role rifle.

Hard to beat a 22-250....and it hits hard enough to be a dual role too...

a friend of my sister has one...in the 2 or 3 years he has had it he has dropped I dont know how many 'yotes and at least 9 deer....

Edi,

Have a look at the .22BR almost ballistically equal to the 22-250 but burns about a third less powder, with a 12 or 14 twist barrel and 50-55grn bullets it would be very potent medicine out to 300yds and some more.

The reduction in powder charge would enable you to choose a shorter barrel then usual helping to eliminate weight.

A 22" No5 contour fluted, would give more rigidity over a standard sporter contour for about the same weight.

A light carbon fibre stock such as the Mcm Hunters Edge combined with a short action (Rem Model 7? ) should give you a package bordering on 7lbs

Fellow member Alycidon is speccing a very similar walk about rifle as well.

Good on you Edi, I did exactly the same Thursday evening, you just can't beat a bit of bunny bashing to relieve a bit of stress.

As far as a new gun, I'm chuffed to bits with my new .22-250 AI its so flat shooting, may be the one if your looking for something different or a stock .22-250 if your not.

All the best

Dave

Hi Ian,

the 22br seems to be the missing link between 223 and 22-250,

but i think i need to stay with an established calibre.

a) In Ireland we are not really sure if handloading will be

for certain legalised, its a bit grey at the moment. My sergent

is trying to find out at the moment what the story is.

 I'm quite new to handloading and although it's going well

i've got no clue of fire forming and so yet.

What I'd be better at is making myself a carbon stock, ala

hunter's edge, just with the finest materials and shaped

to suit me. I'm just working on a remmy plug to make a mould.

At the moment I've got a 26" barrel + 5" mod, try turn that

baby around inside the car! 22 - max 24" would be ok. Rather

loose a couple fps.

Dave,

the flat shooting is nice, but i need to learn dialing in and wouldn't

mind trying the heavier side, up to 75gr. A few weeks ago i had a few

shots at a 300m range with my handload 308 a-maxes, I was so

delighted that the data i got off the norma program worked. Dialed

in 15 clicks up and a couple for wind, first shot was 38mm from bull center.

That got me thinking and I'm selling my 223 with scope and all, start fesh.

I'm selling it to my friend, new to rifle shooting, at least I won't need to work

on his rifle then.

308,

22-250 is deer legal in Ireland, for everything.

Now I don't want to use it on deer, but for popping a deer

out of a farmers back garden discreetly it's an option.

And the view on the pic, about 10 miles out lies the Lusitania

sunk by a german sub in the first war. Good fishing now.
