Skany

My M85 loves 155 Sierra Match Kings (or 147gr Scenars)with 47.0gr Varget behind it.

The twist rate in the M85 is 1:12 RH twist

There you go.

Reecy

thanks reecy

my m84 has 1-14 stamped on the chamber end of the tube but when i mesure it it seems closer to 1-15

mine much prefers Amax over the scenars and at a modest charge of 44.5g of vit 150!

its almost anoying that it performs on a par with my custom 6br

cheers Andy

Hi ,I'm a newbie to this group ,I just acquired an M82 less it's correct scope but have a Kahles zf 6 x 42 coming hopefully tomorrow from Italy. The correct mounts and bases came from Norman Clark and when it's together I'll be off to the range to shoot it. I've got a good supply of 7.62 on hand I use in my Enforcer and Indian SMLE but having trawled the forums I am going to load either 155 Scenars or Sierra Palma Match and whatever powder works best .I have Varget , N140 ,N150 and N550 to choose from ,any ideas ?I'm looking for correct sling L8A1 but the only one I found was a horrendous price .

Photos when I go and shoot it ,can't wait despite the vile weather.

Norman Clark will fabricate a Picatinny style rail for you - he did one for my P-H M87 ex-police rifle some years back which also has a flat top. (The M87 was a development of the M84 single-shot target rifle action rather than the M85 Brit Army contract inspired sniper rifle as you might have thought.) The rail isn't a true 'Picatinny' (M1913 MILSTD) rail as it uses slightly different slot spacing, but Picatinny / Weaver mounts fit. You can't do a scope swap from a 1913MILSTD rail fitting without moving the ring positions.

Mine seems to be an ex police rifle and came with the Pecar from an Enforcer. I still have the Pecar in the cupboard and am undecided whether to sell it on or look for an Enforcer to mate it with. If the owner of Enforcer 077 is around I have your scope.....

I picked up a Kahles ZF69 from Germany, low 26mm rings from Norman Clarke and an L8A1 sling from Peter Laidlaw (at an eye watering price). The rifle came with a period Mk1 Harris Bipod.

I've hardly had chance to shoot the thing but the initial range outing had RG holding 1.5MOA and my TRG Scenar load sub MOA with the trigger heavy and creeping. I suspect there is much better to come after a good clean, a now crisp trigger and a properly worked up load.

The Kahles has a BDC turret set for 149gr FMJ. From playing with Quickload I came up with a 155 Scenar load that follows the same trajectory to 600 yds. From memory 2600fps and circa 42gr of N140 was what I came up with but the info is on another computer. I've not had time to work up the load and verify yet.

I will be interested to hear how you get on with yours.

Cheers

Tony

Bill at Norman Clarke has made up the diopter sight to mount on the rear base and has the foresight in stock - no had chance to sollect these yet either.

VERY nice Tony! There cannot be many M82s around in the UK I'd have thought since most police forces had their Enforcers and our forces never bought the model so far as I've read - has to be rare you'd imagine, but I stand to be corrected on that if hordes of owners chip in!

I don't know what it is about these rifles, but they still have an appeal for many old f*rts like me. I'd imagine younger shooters think Parker-Who? or if they even know what they are, think ..... long Mauser 98 based bolt, blind magazines .... what cr*p!!

I had the chance of an M85 rebarrelled with a top quality stainless match barrel at a bargain price some years back and still kick myself for letting it pass by. That's another question of course - whatever happened to all the M85s? After P-H lost out to AI on the Army sniper contract and put the rifle onto the civilian market, you couldn't go to a regional club day at Strensall without at least one being used, sometimes as many as three. Then, after a year ort two they seemed to go underground - haven't seen one for a long time (but I don't shoot Service or Tactical).

Just loaded up some 155 sierras into new Remington brass 42grs of viht 140 and we'll see how it goes .Couldn't get to range last week because of super heavy snow ,this week it's flooded out ! Sod's law and here's me itching to try it out --- aarrrrgh !

Still looking for an L8A1 sling for sensible money ,I'm a pensioner and can't afford £150 for a nylon sling !

This is the only wooden rifle I own Laurie but I am starting to see the appeal. I had been looking at vintage sniper set ups (4T, K98 ) etc but wanted modern capability too - I came accross the M82 and it felt like a good compromise although is of course only 30 or so years old. Now if I could find an M85 at a decent price that would make a nice pair. Norman still has the trio of test rifles on the rack with a £5K price tag, I take a look every time I go in .....

Marty, I paid over £200 for the sling, new and unissued - absolute madness based on what I paid for the rifle. £150 is still a lot of money for a sling but I doubt you would lose much if you ever came to sell it. Did your Kahles turn up? As an aside, I contacted the factory to source a replacement screw for the turret and they were incredibly helpful on a 30+ year old scope, great service.

My PS is garbled on the post above - it was meant to say Norman Clark has the diopter backup sight components. If you can speak to Bill (semi retired, only there on Fridays) he can tell you anything you could wish to know about the rifle.

I can't see the sling in Tony's pic 100% - but that just looks like the issue sling for an L96 so surprised to see the high prices you chaps seem to be paying. . Is there a difference?

Try finding one on the civi market Matt :( If you have a source.........

They went from canvas to nylon and back to canvas but I don't believe the sling has changed.

I am given to understand that the same design of sling was fitted to the L42A1 ,M82,M85 and L96 and is still current ,The early ones were a nylon material which was deemed too flammable after the Falklands war ,it was changed to a cotton/canvas type material but changed again to a non flammable ,non slippy kind which is now current.Still not worth £150.

The scope arrived from Italy is perfect ,fitted and zeroed opticall down our field ,it remains to be seen how accurate it all is but the bore is perfect, headspace .0015" .All I need is a spot of good weather and I'll be cooking with gas (or rather viht 140) ;¬))

Incidently TC, mine is exactly like the one in the photo ,less the sling.I have the original iron sights and the spacers for the butt.

When it arrived I stripped and cleaned it , there was an enormous amount of dried gummy oil ,the trigger release was appalling.I stuck it in the ultrasonic cleaner for 20 mins with clean fluid and when I came back to it the fluid was filthy grey and I couldn,t see the bottom of the tank! Trigger now spotless and crisp . I cleaned the bore with Parker Hale "MOTTY" paste ,I don't know what's in it but although the bore looked clean to start with the patches were coming out green and black for a while ,now it's like a mirror . Can't wait to shoot it ,like a kid with a new toy.
