shrek
My current 308, Tikka M55 with the target stlye stock never shot quite right when i first got it, and apon pulling the action out of the stock i found the problem. A bedding plate was missing from under the action which meant the action was see-sawing on the woodend stock ! I quickly sorted the problem with some epoxy putty, however as i rushed the job and only had limited knowlegde of what i was doing at the time, to put it frankly, i didnt make a very good job, the rifle now shoots. However i know that there is a botch job goin on under the action. I have always wanted a rifle bolted down onto an aluminium bed, so i though bugger it ive got the mill, ebay sorted the billet aluminum and i started this evenin!! Wouldnt of thought there will be many M55's with an aluminium block bed As you can see i still have a good bit to do, but i thought id share it with you guys! PeteL
Nice one, Shrek. This looks to be a most interesting project. How do you propose to attach the block to the stock?. Can it just be inletted and glued or is something radical needed?. I've often thought about the same thing but all my rifles are round actions so cutting the bed in the Aluminium block would need correctly radiused cutters. I made enquiries about such cutters some time ago with a firm who specialise in one-offs. Cost? - don't ask!. Best of luck with your endeavours and please keep us all up to date. shrek
One off cutters!!! as you say expensive stuff! Maybe a simple one could be ground out of high speed steel?? however im not going to bother as that means i would be lowering myself to buyin a remmy 700 (Thats right ratty)!! Would be a challenge however! Anythings worth a try once! Im going to make a jig to hold the stock so i can deepen the inlet in the stock and bore out the mounting screw hoes for the pillars, the bottom half of that block it going to be milled then turned whilst offset in the lathe, creating a one peice block and pillar bed, the pillars will be grooved and the bottom surface of the aluminium block roughened up and epoxyed into the stock, then the action will be bedded down with some devcon, or similar epoxy based jungle juice! ejg223
Shrek, sounds like fun. The aluminium/wood transition could be tricky. edi

PeteL
Shrek, Yes, I'd thought about turning something up from HSS but to get the radius I'll need a ball turning attachment. Ok, easy enough. Then turn it into a spade type bit, perhaps, or a single edge cutter. What brought the whole thing to a halt was how to form the clearance and relief angles. They are not straight edges but curves on such a tool. That was beyond me, I'm afraid. I had thought of ball nose slot drills but couldn't find them in the correct radius, they're pretty expensive and I'd need one for each action because they're all different radii (except for the two Weatherbys). I'd also have to buy a milling chuck large enough to take them. Gave up in the end. Instead of offsetting in the lathe to form the pillars, couldn't you use a boring head in the mill with the cutting bit facing in instead of out?. Would that work, do you know?. Or is it a totally daft idea as many of mine are. Once again, good luck with your project and don't forget the pictures!. Peter
