gbal
Mark,it won't be faster-but just how much velocity is reduced varies a little- 30 fps per inch might be ball park. Does that matter-very little in normal use (tikka are quite savvy;some like more compact rifles) You can't just add more/different powder (nor need to) without some pressure increases, some think there is some leeway-not much. Do you need to-well,commercial ammo varies a bit : Comparative SAAMI data 24" barrel, 200y zero,10 mph wind ;drop/drift in inches at 300y : Rem 32g Accu Tip @4225 fps 4.1/10.1 Fed 32 Nosler BT @4030 4.7/10.6 Win 32 Bal SilTip @4050 4.6/10.6 Horn 40 V MAX @3900 4.3/7.8 Rem 40 AccuTip @3900 4.3/8.6 Nos 40 BalTip @3625 5.5/10.2 Slight differences in bullet shape (BC) make small difference even if weight the same(first two 40g) Quite large vel diffs can make very small differences (32 g show this very clearly for 200fps; even nearly 300fps not much-see 40g)-but such small differences are unlikely to be field significant-or even noticed. I hope this puts it into perspective;get the rifle you like. Much ballistic tosh is bandied about. gbal
camo304
Going up to look at a 20" Tikka t3, will velocities be much lower or will i just need a different faster powder? Mark 20" is fine i chopped my Rem from 26 to 20, foxes out to 300 yards don't know any diff
Andrew
I've got a Tikka Compact T3 204 with a factory 20 inch barrel. Deadly.~Andrew
hunter686
Best group i have ever shot from my factory T3 was 5 shot group of 1/2 an inch at 318 yards. I cut the section out the target and keep it with my dies for good times sake. I can easily put them in an inch at that distance on the regular Load: 39sbk 27.4gr N135 Nosler Brass 7.5 primers
RETIC80
Im running a Savage 12 LRPV .204 , nightforce 8-32, ase utra, 32 gr vmax handloads, foxes drop like a sack of s###e, no runners. Very good rifle and round, going to be putting a drone 15x on it when they come back in stock next month.
gbal
camo,Andrew, hunter, retic:no disagreement -the 204 at 300 yards does what the 22/250 properly fettled does a bit further, and the 22/250 does what the 243 properly fettled does a lot further...if need be. If I was only shooting small varmints under 300y,and could not run a 6mm,i'd get a 204.If it was mostly 250 yards-well a good 222 or 223 Sako, or 22PPC would do....whatever shoots sub .5 moa (in wind?). gbal
Aussie Foxer
I've just picked up my new T3X Super Varmint in 204, 3rd time lucky, the first 2 new rifles had faulty finishes on the exterior of the barrels. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, will be using factory fodder to start with. Scope is a Meopta Meostar 3-12x56 with illuminated dot ret. It's gonna be my new foxing rifle. Aussie Foxer
Shoots great with either 32 or 40 grain V MAX factory , group is at 200 yards. 100 yards is just one ragged hole. Well worth paying the extra and getting the Super Varmint in my opinion. Might as well wring every bit of accuracy out of it with a consistent cheek weld. .
