bradders
I have been teaching myself to flute using my new dividing head This is an old scrap barrel and I decided to be adventurous and attempt to copy the AMU's SDM style of 12 flutes. These are 3/16" wide and .090" deep In the last pic there are only 4 flutes as I didn't judge the position of the chuck, but now I know, and today was about learning. For comparison, before fluting this 20" Hbar barrel was 1542 gms, and now weighs 1352. I would predict another few gms off to be around 200gms total weight saving as is My std 18" mid weight SPR profile barrel weighs 1156gms Fluting on the front is .060" deep, I wouldn't go this deep again here Is it worth the 3-4 hrs it takes to do?? Who knows, but it does look bloody awesome

bradders
Cheers Mik, I believe you. As for me, incredibly labour intensive. I intend to make a new barrel for myself over the weekend, so thought I'd try this and see how it performs

Ronin
Looks good question - always thought there needed to be a "rolling pressure pad" or similar on the opposite side of the work piece (180 degrees to the cutter - to stop or prevent vibration / chatter - how do you overcome this, or has it not manifested ? bradders
I had it backed with an angle plate and clamped down solid on 2 axis. Today I did a new barrel for real and here's some pics of the finished article after painting. I ran out of light so will take pics of the rifle tomorrow All I can say is try it, but set plenty of time aside, I did
