minumum barrel diameter able to be threaded.

I have very kindly been given a ruger m77 in .243 and want to get it threaded for a mod.

The barrel diameter at the crown is only .5" and looks too thin to be threaded but would like to ask if it safely

can.

If not what is the minimum barrel thickness to make it possible.

I would anticipate that the barrel diameter farther back will be a bit larger, why not chop it a few inches back and thread there...

Depending on profile of course - obviously, if its a parallel .500" it won't be suitable..

Not sure if its safe to do but how about asking a smith to make an adaptor, get your barrel threaded (male) then an adaptor that has a female thread to match the barrel and a male thread of your choice for the moderator. If and thats a big IF, you will probably need the adaptor bonding on to the barrel, but most likely the whole idea is not suitable for centre fire calibres and you've just wasted your time reading this

No reason why this would not work but to make sure its concentric to the bore the outer thread should be cut after the adapter is fitted to the barrel you'd need to go for a bigger thread than 1/2" so there's some meat in it.
