Andrew
George, I get you ojn the 30-30. Yes, not enough bolt guns. As factory ammo is loaded for Lever guns, only handloaders get the benefits of a bolt gun (accuracy aside). As to the Custer battle. The Sioux were issued repeating rifles by the government for hunting and there is some pretty good evidence that they were used against Custer... for the 20 minutes it took to kill him and his company of soldiers. Col's Reno and Benteen later made a case for a repeating rifle siting the fact that their Springfields, while having the range, did not have the fire power of the repeating rifles the Siuox used against them at the Little Big Horn. The Government wouldn't spent the money on repeaters other than Spencers which were already in limited service. Custer's Michigan Volunteers used Spencers in the Civil War and were used later by Custer defending some rail road engineers against superior numbers of Sioux. Some think it jaded his view in combat at the Little Big Horn; he was very much used to shooting his way out of trouble and the Trapdoors weren't up to the task.~Andrew
