huntsman
I remember posting something like this before ,but not sure if it was this, site so apologies for repeating myself. I am looking at a sauer stutzen in 308 or 30-06 . I have used one in 308 and it was fine but there was quite a bit of muzzle flip. I have fired a 30=06 in a sporter big bang and recoil but didn't didn't notice the flip. There was 4 inches difference in the barrel lenghts. Are these observations correct or is it just down to the different styles of rifles. Anyone have experience or views on these calibers? Andrew
I have used them both for several decades. What's the question? I think your experience of the "muzzle flip" was due to the style of the rifle.~Andrew
ejg223
I'd choose 308 with the steel receiver not aluminium. Out of the short barrel and up to 165gr no difference in in performance to a 3006. Just a bit more tidy. edi
Guest 308Panther
A few years back the US NRA had to make an adj to its targets used in comps....http://www.snipercountry.com/Articles/AccuracyFacts.asp Seems the .308 shooters were kickin butt over the '06 shooters...and to further broaden the gap between the 2 they made the x ring smaller. Most serious comp shooters over here now use the .308. Also... If you are a reloader you may find that its cheaper to reload for the .308 as it uses less powder. Now you can of course load the '06 down to the velocities of a .308 but why would ya want to?? Why not just buy the .308 to begin with.? It cracks me up to read that an '06 shooter/reloader is usin x grains of this powder and that bullet weight and they are at so many feet per second....Now pull up a load table for the .308 and son of a gun,it matches a factory load for the .308. For the most part...all things the same,Same rifle model, factory ammo. The .308 and the 30-06 are identical out to 250 -300 yrds...then the '06 has an edge over the .308 on energy/velocity. That said...The majority of you guys wont shoot a Deer past 150yrds. So why put yourself thru the added recoil that the '06 gives? Why use more powder than what ya need? Somethin else....The .308, 30-06, 300 WinMag and the 30-30 all use the same diameter bullet. so you could load up some 110gr bullets and make a real varmint screamer...if ya paid attention to the rifling twist...or use 180Gr RN bullets and ya got a real brush buster. My buddy has a Rem 700 in '06....I have 2 .308's My Win 70 and my Black Rifle. I have shot his '06...I dont like it. It kicks my a+s,leaves bruises...and unmodded this thing Barks...Loud. My Win70 I shoot all day long and it doesnt bother me. And compared to that my Black Rifle just Rock and Rolls. I' ll take a .308 over an '06 any day of the week...but then again I am prejusticed 308Panther
huntsman
Thanks guys, this was the way I thought I would go. With this style of rifle you would be max shooting to 200-250 yds, so as you say panther beyond the 300 yd mark is where the 30-06 shines. Not really relevant in my case. I will go with the 308. Guest 308Panther
And then there is the....Long action ,Short action thing too... '06 bein a long action of course. That extra 6mm of bolt throw will make a fast 2nd shot kinda unhandy till ya get used to it ..... I did say I was prejusticed right? Only too happy to help out. 308Panther
