devilishdave
What velocity is acheivable in a .308 using 155 projectiles from a 20 inch barrel? any powder/load advice would be appreciated? Dave
colin jalland
2830 FPS out of 24" if that's of any help .I would of thought about 2700 fps .6mm br quote 2592 fps with 20" and 44.5 gr of varget and you can go 1.5-2.00 gr above that but work up slowly .What rifle is it ? cheers Colin
rabbit fingers
Had a 308 with a 20" barrel. around 2680 was the best accurate load with 155's and viht N135. Varget gave similar but muzzle blast was greater. ended up with 168's as they could be driven almost as fast with a better BC.

rabbit fingers
Came close with N135 but accuracy not good and brass took a beating. What are you trying to do that an extra 100 fps will make a difference? There is a Varget load the palma shooters use but it's way over pressure, quickload says it's over 13000 psi over max, NOT RECOMENDED.
devilishdave
That is what the turrets on my scope (AI .308 PM2 Turret for green spot) are calibrated for. I thought it was worth a try if safe to see what the accuracy was. The rifle has never shot over 1moa with any ammo so hoping if I could get the velocity the accuracy might also be reasonable. The Gun Pimp
Just over 2700 last time I shot one (from Tactical Rifles Inc. in America) 155gn bullets with Vit 140 Cheers Vince
rabbit fingers
I wouldn't recommend pushing the limits with N140, I found pressures climbed very quickly as I approached max loads. May have been my lot of powder or rifle but be careful if you try it. Great powder with mild loads though. 44gr seems to work a treat in most rifles with 155'S but you'll only get 2600fps at most in a 20 inch barrel. eldon
With around 150 155 grain heads n140 will go in most rifles to 46 grains, obviously work up etc. Once got about 2900 using 150 grain sierras with N140 out of 26" barrel. Does sound like you might be pushing the boat out a bit at 2830 fps and 20"
