Thanks for resurrecting this thread, comb raisers are on my wish list at the moment. I've just ordered a couple of slip-ons (oooer, missus) but something like this might suit a couple of my rifles. I'll phone him for an estimate tomorrow.

I think the ones in Scotland are too far away unless nothing comes up dahn sarf (or east or west). I've done some range shooting in the US with friends who own all manner of firearms but no hunting there. Forecast is good tomorrow. I'll pack a picnic, head up to the quarry in the afternoon for some targets (new moderator on one rifle so that'll need zeroing) followed by an evening on the foxes. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

It'll be a while before I'm seeing my friends in the US, either here or there. Their countrymen seem hell bent on infecting the entire country, it's going to be months before I get the chance to pick up some cheap ammunition.

I'm very conscious of the fact that my last formal firearms tuition was thirty-five years ago (and nothing at all to do with sport shooting). I shoot alone and am not at all interested in joining a club so learning by osmosis isn't going to happen. Actually I'm quite happy with this in some ways but I am also aware that since gaining my FAC a couple of years ago I may have developed undesirable habits that an 'outsider' would identify. I also want to shoot more accurately, I've let many targets escape because I wasn't sure of a clean kill. The last thing I want on my conscience is a an animal suffering on my account. There's also the fun of producing a cloverleaf on a paper target, I'd like to be able to manage that on a regular basis. Riflecraft have been suggested and I'm trying to contact them, other suggestions gratefully accepted.

Can someone explain why the impact point changes when a moderator is removed? On my .17 hmr I noticed a 6" higher shot fall at 100 yards, I assume it's down to the Fizzicks of gases swirling in the moderator as the round passes through but I could (most likely) be talking through my hat.

Following your suggestion I tried a reed type and having used it for only this evening I'm really surprised at the results. The first one came in within (and I'm not exaggerating here) a minute which I thought was a fluke but at another spot a similar thing happened (two minutes). The third one was a youngster who seemed more confused than anything but it was enough to hold him still for as long as I needed. There would have been a fourth who barked every time I blew but he was on the other side of a small river in long grass and couldn't cross over. I could tell pretty much where he was but couldn't see him so, no shot. We were going back and forth "Squeeeeek...bark!...squeeeek...bark!" for about ten minutes until I blew a bum note and he rumbled me. I was planning to use the .17 but that started acting up while I was target bashing earlier in the day (I think the moderator has had it) but fortunately I'd taken the .243 to check the zero so used that. On the grounds of noise and cost though I may give the .17 a try, providing I can get it (or me) to shoot straight.

I did wonder but thought a light film of silicone might do the trick.

I can't find these locally. Buying online is an option but at £1-2 each plus a RFD to RFD fee not really attractive. Why shouldn't I cut down a shell, seal the top and just use that?

In their pre-amble to the application to join all seemed keen to see online evidence of my shooting. Publicity is the last thing I want so they're almost certainly not for me anyway. Ignorant buggers might have least replied though.

I was about to ask the same question for exactly the same scope. Well, that and a Nikko Stirling. I've emailed Igor with screenshots of both reticles and a promise to buy the Pro version if they are added. Fingers crossed.

Does anyone use these? I don't 'do' social media but a friend suggested they contain useful info so I thought I'd join. I applied to three (gave my real name and my username here and other forums) yet none replied. One had something in the application notes to the effect that if I didn't have pictures relating to foxing on my social media they'd be unlikely to grant me access and while I'm aware of their desire to avoid antis I imagine most of us don't plaster graphic pictures all over the web. Are they active or not worth the bother? (I think I've already worked out the answer).

I read that as beginning with 'kack'. Which probably says more about me thatn anything else. Thanks all. I'm nowhere near Halifax so will start off with pellets, a bit of sand and work my way up from there. (I initially filled it with sand and nearly gave myself a hernia).

What is used to fill these? Surely something lighter than just sand?

I'll echo the CZ recommendations. You can a used one for circa £200 and if you miss, throw the gun at the rabbit then pick it up and carry on. I imagine mine has lived in at least five farm kitchens over its lifetime and is still going strong. I'll sell it at some point but only to buy a newer one.

Thanks Barrelsniffer, I was about to pose the question 'Fox Pro or ICOtech?' following a fairly successful night last night with a bag of five foxes. Yomping round the fields on foot on the offchance of seeing something is pretty inefficient though and if I'm going to be doing it regularly I'd rather laager up and draw them in from afar to a point where I've got a clear shot. Might start with squeakers and go from there.
