  1. I had the same Howa you are looking at, It was 2nd hand, it also loved 55gr sako game head and home load 50gr blitz kings. got on well with fox and crows with BK and Roe with game heads Never owned a 204 (friends have). I think it has been summed up well as the 223 being a good choice, Its easy to load for and ammo off the shelf is ........ I presume, still is easy to find.

Be confident the rifle is proven to shoot well.....Im sure it is but test it if you can if your not sure.

Oh and I posted the trigger unit to Mike Norris and it came back sweet as a nut with a lighter requested pull, Well worth doing

    Good luck

I’ve got one. It’s stunning. The picture quality with the new BAE 12micron 640 sensor is amazing. However you need a low mag scope to see the full screen. So my 3x12 Hawke and  3x12 Nikko  Stirling scopes the screen is slightly magnified but the quality of the thermal is amazing. And it hardly pixelates when you mag up. With my ZEISS 1.8 -14 V8 scope the whole screen fits in the FOV of the day scope  and you can mag up from there. I have just bought a Nikko Stirling 1.5-6 scope which I think will be ideal. The quality of the glass is less important as you are essentially are just focusing on a  high res screen. That being said the quality of the image is sharper than my Pulsar Accolade 2 thermal which is 17micron pixel pitch. They are very good and your day scope zero stays intact. If they does drift with a long menu press of 10secs you can realign your point  of impact with your day scope reticle. Great piece of kit

That's a great bit of info thanks.

I take from this a base mag of 5 is not ideal. Do you think it would be seriously limiting or doable? say would you be able to find and shoot a fox at say 60yards with a base mag of 5 please?

  3. Yes why not discuss? I see stalking as more risky, chance of a knife accident involving hospital treatment. Shooting vermin out of your truck window or on your farm is diffrent.

i have decided to stop shooting at the moment. Got too much work on anyway and want to play it safe with my permissions and police

    Hi

I emailed the developer regarding my question I've just received an email from him saying that the measurements is to be taken at the turret.

Thanks for that it’s good to know what they recommend. Variations in measurement (from turret to front of scope) would have more effect at close range 0 to 50m. with all other variables it would be lost at 1000m

    happy shooting

  5. Following................ do it all scope......long range varminting, good in low light but also will work  say an add on Pard. I was looking at the Delta 3-24 x 56 ED? Does anyone have experience of this scope? the mag range and some general good feed back re Delta optics is catching my interest.

2 watch-outs pointed out to me were, if an add on could fit on with the ocular illumination? Is the tall dialing turret option going to block the ir of a Pard?

  6. Never got on to the game kings.

I now use a 6mm to combine longer range gongs and roe legal for England, I did not feel the 223 was not a suitable caliber for Roe. Sako 55gr soft points were great. most shot at 100M some to 170M no way i feel is it a bit light weight at those ranges. I would say perfect. Its all about shot placement not 243 vs 223

I dont think anyone is shooting "90Kg +" deer with a 244? 25Kg Larder weight is a good Roe or are my scales broken?

  7. I don’t lube in side of neck when using neck bushing die. Just out side of neck Take the bushing out now and then, clean and put a bit of oil on it. Buggers for getting stuck in if left in untouched. this Die de primes, no expander and bumps the shoulder back. I clean well after every use. Bushing is .265 this gives me 1.5 to 2 thou neck tension

I would agree with whats been said about the niggleoh, works ok when side mounted but i found the rifle slopped about when mounted on the underside of the stock.Went with the z-aim.Much more secure in my experience.I have a niggleoh which i could let you have a lend of if you like.If you want to keep it i will happily sell it to you for the price of a z aim.

I have also just got a z aim and get on fine with it. Its not that great as a normal sling but i have a hand spare when i use it like that. when the cross over strap is in place I think its a huge improvement. getting over fences and having 2 hands spare perfect!

I have one, very comfortable and easy to get the rifle off with practice, my stock has side mounted flush cups so my rifle is vertical while being carried, they spread the weight very well

I tested one last week. With conventional mounted points it flopped from side to side on my back when getting over a fence and on other occasions. I think it would be spot on side mounted. That’s the key. It was well made. With the release clips I thing you could get it into a shooting position without waving your arms all over the place.

A good option would be to go to the British Shooting show (15-17 feb) and have a look at many choices under one roof. The big marquees S&B, March, Swarovski etc will be there plus major retailers- Optics warehouse and Sportsman’s.

if you are shooting a specialised disciple then the optic will be quite specific eg f class - light optic, high mag, 2fp, fine dot reticule. Top of the food chain for this are the likes of Nightforce Competion and March 10-60 x56 high master scopes.

For LR or ELR the IOR crusader with 100 moa of elevation and March Genesis with 400 moa of elevation are worth a good look.

For something more versatile FFP I would be looking at the new March 5-42x56 PRS scope and the S&B 5-45x56 with the new LRR reticle. (Hint we have ordered two of those for our AI rifles).

This is good advice. When spending that sort of money it is good to get your preferred options “in your hand” feel the quality, weight and how it functions and adjusts with advice on hand.If NEC is out of your way North show is Harrogate in May. Not sure if the distributors are all the same.

I was sceptical as maybe you are. They were recommended to me by my local gunsmiths Dauntsey Guns who are  in a high density roe area. They said that the feedback they'd had from customers was good. I can't deny it's marketed as a varmint bullet but my experience has not been that of it exploding / fragmenting in an unwanted manner.

Mike that’s very helpful thank you

Shot in the region of 50 roe with 87 grain V-Max in 243 Win @ circ 3100fps MV. No silly head shots, all heart and or lungs. Not on one of them have I accidentally hit the shoulder, so I can't account for how they expand if you do. What I can say is this, these are by far the best bullet I have used on roe. No excessive damage, whether 40m shot or 250m shot. If you hit the heart and or lungs with the odd rib only on entrance on exit then you get good exit and blood and never more than your normal 20 metre run before they collapse for obvious reasons. I have 308 and 284 but 243 87grns are my roe preferred choice. I say I've shot about 50, it may be more, I'm just being conservative.

They are reasonably prices and good BC to boot.

    Mike

Interesting a varmint bullet designed to fragment is the best you have come across for chest shooting roe. I was thinking it would be a non starter but I have a feeling my 88gr Berger varmint will be fine. I shot a 4 inch post today at 100m exit was about double the size of the entrance. My old soft points would have had a bigger exit. 55gr soft points in my 223 seemed perfect on roe. But They hardly ever exited. I never lost any and meat damage was non existent. Thanks for the feed back

  13. Update re the 88gr Berger varmints

I have head shot a Roe at 70M. perfect dropped on the spot good penetration and exit devastating. I also shot a crow over 230M away stone dead the bullet passed through it with little / no evidence of expansion.

Not explosive like a blitz king. I think less than a V max also.

I am yet to chest shoot a Roe with these bullets but I have a feeling they will be fine.
