  1. I've also shot this bullet with great effect from a 24" barrel (not a Tikka though) 243. Also used N160 with around 43grns of powder (I think !) which helped to preserve barrel life (N150 may be a little hot ?).

Myself and my cousin had the same configuration and his eventually went south after 4000+ rounds..........I got bored with mine and swapped it for a 6BR !

  2. I've owned and shot both.

Both were on a Stiller single shot action and unusually with the same barrel. Initially chambered in 243Ackley and then re-chambered to 6BR when I fell out of love with the 243..........I then fell out of love with the 6BR and have had the action barrelled in a 284.

I personally found absolutely no accuracy difference between the two chambering. Obviously the 243Ackley held much more powder and was therefore faster than the BR with the same bullet (85grn game kings) which resulted in not a lot more than a few less clicks of elevation !

I've got to buck the trend here and say I did not particularly enjoy shooting the 6BR.....nothing to do with the case per se as i've got a 22BR and absolutely love that.....I just couldn't fall in love with it.

I know the current thinking is that the short/fat case is inherently more accurate and that may be so in the world of benchrest shooting but I personally think in a hunting application you won't find any difference..........just my opinion for what it's worth.

  3. Hi Lee,

Berger manual predicts 31fps loss per inch from 24" downwards.

I shoot 50/52 grain through my 20" Shillen barrel and get 3650 fps.....more than enough in my opinion !

22BR with relatively fast powder will be fully burned by 16" (or so I'm reliably informed by the 'Smith who built the gun) so 20" barrel is fine. Mine is a very heavy profile and has almost no recoil. I love it !

    Regards, Rob.

  4. I have an AI Ax chassis with 20" Bartlein barrel barrel, built by Steve Kershaw.......I absolutely love the cartridge and the build.

    I use 32grn of N135 behind either 50grn V-max or 52grn Berger....both shoot great groups at around 3650fps.

    Couldn't be happier :D:D

    Regards, Rob.

  5. Definitely agree with the above........got to be marginal on rats at 100yds.

If you're static with a great rest and solid comfortable position then give it a go, but if you're wandering around or shooting out of, or off the bonnet of a vehicle, then too many variables at 100 yds with the semi auto........probably marginal IMO with a 22lr of any flavour.

    Regards, Rob.

  6. I had one of these and used it regularly for ratting and rabbiting. I think it was the 16" carbon barrel version and was very accurate with most ammunition, best being Eley I seem to remember.....it would shoot 1" groups at 100yds if I concentrated and did my bit but average was around 1.5-2.0".

I don't have it any more as I don't have the time to use it, I remember it would feed well with the 10 round mags but struggled with the larger 30 round mags.....I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one, but the usual caveats apply if buying secondhand..........enjoy !

    Regards, Rob.

  7. Looking for advice/experience please.

I'm having a .284 built with a 26" barrel in 1:9 twist, on a Stiller Predator single shot action, so no issues with feeding/OAL.

I'd like to shoot a bullet in the 150-180grn range, but here's the issue...........I'd like to shoot longish range (up to 1000yds) on paper/steel but also use it for hunting, mainly UK deer and also a bit of foxing/varminting.

My thoughts were initially with the Berger VLD family but now considering 160grn Sierra TMK.

Anyone got any experience or advice, or am I looking for a Holy Grail bullet that doesn't exist ??

    Regards, Rob.

  9. Its because the NEC have banned all big game operators from the show after receiving complaints "from their customers" and a petition with 35000 signatures lobbying them not to allow the safari operators........thin end of the wedge methinks !!

    Regards, Rob.

ps long thread on SD about this.

  10. I run a 22BR for foxing in an AI AX chassis. When looking at barrel length I confess I went purely for aesthetics as I wanted my mod to fit snuggly up to  the barrel shield.

Goes against conventional wisdom but ended up at 19.75"

Shoots way better than me with 50grn Bergers running at 3640fps........not had any complaints from Charlie out to 400yds....just bang flop !

Bonus is hardly any recoil in that chassis so get to see the whole show.  Can't recommend the cartridge highly enough.

Attached is a 5 shot group at 200yds.

    Regards, Rob.

  11. Hi Paul,

I had a problem with an NXS I bought off here.....wouldn't hold more than a 4" group at 100yds.

Sent it via my RFD to SGC who checked it and said they had shot it and agreed it would only hold a 4" group but thought that was acceptable !!

A brief discussion between me/RFD/SGC and they sent it back to USA.......I had no receipt/proof of purchase, etc .

About 4 weeks later it returned from Nightforce looking like new (refurbished....not a new scope but hard to tell the difference) with a report saying they could find nothing wrong the scope (this is quite common apparently as Nightforce scopes are NEVER faulty;)). Once fitted and test fired, suddenly the outfit now shoots 1/2" groups at 100yds.

Send it back to NF they will sort it for sure 👍👍

    Regards, Rob.

  12. Hi Sam,

Can't help with the Bergers, but my 6BR loves the 85grn Sierras ! I also use N135....31.0grns; very happy with the results.

I'm pretty sure if you're in the 30-32grn range you'll find a happy place in there somewhere ! As always start low and work up.

    Regards, Rob.

  13. Hi Stephentri,

If you're looking for an unbiased review of this scope then i'm probably the wrong person as i'm a Delta convert !!

I've had the Titanium 4.5-30 for over a year and love it so muchI bought the 5-50 3 months ago on the back of it. I love it !!

I personally like a fine reticle and the Delta has that and a superfine centre dot that illuminates with 11 stages of adjustment with "off" between each level which i like.

Glass is very subjective, but to me Delta glass is better than Nightforce (i've had 2 NXS's) and almost on a par with S&B (i've had a PM2) and considerably cheaper than both. People ask how it compares to Sightron (similar price point)...i've never had one but looked through my mates and wouldn't thank you for one (just my opinion).

Only downside as mentioned before is the slightly crap coin slots in the turrets but thats a small price to pay.

As said before everyones eyes are different but for me I don't think you can buy any better at the price and without spending at least double.

Hope that helps.....if you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

    Regards, Rob.

  14. As has been said, with your current barrel the biggest limiting factor is going to be the twist rate which will limit you to 85/88 grn bullets, possibly 90/95 max if you're lucky.....i've got a 6mmbr in 10 twist that will not stabilise 95grn bullets well enough for me so have dropped to 85grn that it shoots really well.

If you want max oomph with that weight of bullet and are prepared to homeload then maybe consider a 243AI or maybe a 6x284 both will give you more, but use much more powder.

I had this same dilemma and came to the conclusion that the best compromise was to have 3 rifles !! Happy days.

    Regards, Rob.

  15. If it's during office hours and you have the full address, and owner details  of the land you are invited to shoot on (or O/S grid references etc ) , then a 'phone call to your local licensing office should provide you with details of what calibre the land is cleared to. If it's really short notice and over a weekend then you're out of luck !

Licensing 'round here are very approachable and are happy to take 'phone calls such as this.....can't speak for your's of course but give them a call.

    Regards, Rob.
