  1. I have a thing for short rifles as my ground is heavy woodland. I also use an Eberlestock backpack which doesn’t look like it is carrying a rifle when nothing pops up above the top of the bag.

    I have 16” .308 and 18” .308 and also a 14.5” .243

The .243 is on a Thompson/Centre Encore single shot action and is super short. If barrels were as readily available as in the USA I would have more but prices once here don’t make it a desirable option.

The 18” .308 is on a Blaser R93 I have shot many deer with it now and it is excellent. I use a Sierra 165gr game king on everything from muntjac to large fallow bucks. This is a very short overall package with an over barrel mod.

The 16” .308 is on a rifle call The Fix. This I haven’t had any longer than 6 months and have only shot one deer. It was excellent I don’t anticipate being able to actually see the difference the loss of 2” of barrel will give.
The best part for me is the 6.3lbs weight of the bare rifle and that is uses a removable magazine system and has a folding stock. Issue being I had to import it myself.

  2. New Accuracy International 6.5X47 barrel 24” came from sporting services on my AT and has not been used. £600

Accuracy International muzzle brake also unused £120

To fit any Quick lock AI action be it AT or AX308 Callum Ferguson Kreiger 6.5X47 barrel 24” Threaded 18X1. Unused and is the twin to the barrel I am currently using. £800  which is a huge saving over new.

Both barrels currently with RFD. I have new brass that can be purchased with the barrels at excellent prices. I will not sell separately.

  3. I have first hand experience of this issue. My AT is an earlier model. I believe if your bolt has the fluting showing when the bolt is closed in the action it is of the newer small FP models.

easy way without measuring your firing pin is compare with this photo. Large on the left and small on the right. Both From AT’s

A small thing perhaps and it may already be in place in the U.K. PRL type shoots but prizes - what has gone down well here (cz) is the usual prizes / cups for first 3 places and teams but then at least half a dozen lucky dip prizes- and good ones. This encourages more people to enter who probably know that they don’t have much chance of getting to the top of the leaderboard. In the end it is good business sense.

The large prizes were raffled at the end of the season. Any one who had entered 2 rounds was put into the draw.

I don’t shoot PRL as my time is taken up with CSR every month at Diggle. However I am really quite shocked at this thread. I and a few select others organise, manage and run all CSR comps at Diggle. Near 30 individual competitions per year. And yes it is hard work but we love it. As far as I see it ONE man has had the time, energy and drive to get PRL started in the UK and what do you lot do ??? Discuss what’s wrong with it and how it can be changed !!FFS !! If you don’t like it get off your arse and sort something yourself ! Competitions happen because of the few who give their time to make it happen. If you don’t like it then take up something else !

PRL is being run as a business not just a club shoot. I would say it’s rather different.

  6. I think people aren’t replying through fear of loosing the advantage.

I have had the cartridge debate with Ronin and MJR several times trying to find the ideal trade off between recoil and wind cheating.

I shot a 6.5X47 Lapua Accuracy International AT with a Schmidt PM11 3-20X50 I was hand loading a 130gr Hornady 130gr ELD-M Over 37.5gr N150 for 2820fps and an SD of 6.2. I didn’t have time to develop the load and used the same one I had used for a previous rifle. Another competitor shot an Accuracy International AW in 6.5 creedmoor with a Schmidt scope he used factory Hornady 140gr ELD-M at 2680fps.

    We both scored 93.

Its more about riflemanship than ballistics. One of the Irish lads was using a .308 and the calibre wasn’t what let him down.

6mm cartridge’s struggled to provide a visual feedback when looking for splash on misses. I used mine to adjust point of aim.

What is clear though is knowing whatever cartridge you shoot like the back down your hand will give you the advantage.

The only person I’m out there competing against is myself right now. Because when you make a stupid mistake like short stroking and having a fail to fire causing the mandatory 30 second wait until you can cycle the bolt again which causes a loss of vital points there is only one person to blame. Especially on a 140 second stage.

To respond to Ronin, long action isn’t seconds it’s the risk of poor fundamentals and a short stroke.

Hi currently using viht 150 with 31.0

Mv 2444 which is very moderate. Using 105 scenar L.

    Thanks nick

    That’s really slow MV.

    For 30g Varget 26” barrel I’m getting 2900fps with 105 a-max

  8. I am going to be using N150 when my Varget stash is depleted.

I much prefer N150 to the N140 when I was looking for an alternative to Varget in my other calibres .308/7-08/6.5CM and 6.5X47.
