Tikka T3 PMII Ultra Short

Recommended Posts

Received my 3-20x50 Ultra Short PMII and new Spuhr mounts.

When bedding my 20moa rail I centred the rail via bore scoping with a scope that had the windage in middle position. When fitting the new PMII it only needed 4 clicks to the right to be zeroed.

The Spuhr mounts are also around 20MOA meaning with 20MOA rail I now have around 320 up clicks available.

Total weight of the rifle as in the pic is 5.6kg / 12.3lbs. Barrel is a shortened 22" Lilja F/TR barrel.

I almost bit the bullet on one this Monday, however the only examples on offer had the single turn turret, and I found the clicks to be too fine for me. I see you have the double turn turret, how do you find the click adjustments?

I am not a scope expert!.....just my thoughts.

Every bit of gear seems to have it's ups and downs. I have not used the PMII much yet but the first impression is that the optics at above 15 mag get very sensitive to eye position, clicks on elevation turret are a bit fine and one could loose count, illumination is more dusk/dark useable.

The eye position sensitivity seemed to be not too bad in the field when the stock was adjusted right, the clicks on the elevation turret have a heavier click at ten twenty etc. clicks and help a bit. With the zero stop one is back to the start quickly too if one miss-counts. Not sure if I like the covered windage turret. The clicks on the windage turret are one of the nicest I have every had on a scope.

I chose this scope because it is much smaller and much lighter than most other tactical scopes with around 20 mag and it does make a huge difference. Picking up the rifle is kind of like picking up a hunting rifle now.

The 3 mag is fantastic when going through some cover or gorse and a deer bounces off only to stop for a look back at 50yds recon that is where I might miss the flash dot of a zenith scope. This scope can cover very short to long range which is bonus I recon also for police/mil use.

The locked elevation and lid on windage turret will give a nice bit of confidence nothing changed after some rough handling in heavy terrain but will slow down a quick shot at longer range. I am horrified of loosing the windage turret cap and will practice with hold off.

The P4 fine reticle I have is very crisp, love it.

I really rate the Kahles and it would be my choice if I'd be target shooting at long range however for hunting and plinking the 3-20Ultra Short will suit my needs better. This complete rifle was thought as an affordable 800m capable set-up that weighs kilos less than what is available on the market at the moment. Especially interesting could be the medium barrel weight CTR version. Which could be half a kilo lighter than my 22" F/TR barrel.

Hi edi.

I'm a bit confused, I have a ultra short which I'm struggling to mount.

I was under the impression that standard Spuhr mounts would not fit the Ultra short, they've made a specific mount for it in 0moa only.

You also seem to have loads of room on the rear tube for rings.....I can just about get 26mm rings on mine.

Cheers

Danny.

just checked the sizes online, the 5-20 has ~26mm and the 3-20 ~51mm length on the back of the tube.

I'll check my two spuhr mounts if they would fit.

ps. just checked, my spuhr mount has a 32mm wide ring. Won't fit on the 5-20 short.

Ah confusion over,I was unaware there are two models. Mine is the 5-20,which is obviously a bit shorter.

Thanks for clearing that up for me edi.

Looks a well sorted set up Edi.

Note the safety on the T3 is one of the AS ones, how does it fare in real world use?

Ronin, generally I prefer unloading on safe position especially at night lamping or coming back from a stalk cold and wet. I got used to the position of the safety quite easily and if one takes the lever between two fingers the safety can be moved quietly. Fitting the safety is similar to setting a Mauser safety. Best is one understands the way it works before fitting. When applying the safety one moves the firing pin backwards slightly which is vital as it allows the trigger mechanism to go back to the normal position after one has pulled the trigger in the safe position. Recon all firing pin safeties work similar.

I have not shot too much with the rifle yet, but knocked a fox at 320m. At 470m practice in the field I noticed my drop chart being out by 1.5 clicks, maybe the 2" longer barrel on this rifle compared to my previous bartlein or the tail wind was responsible. I must check speed next.
