AndyCM
Hi Guys, I'd really appreciate a Quickload check if anyone would be so kind. I am looking a short barrel (woodland stalking rifle), and looking at various calibres. Can a 6.5x47 get 120g bullets (say Nosler BT) to around 2600fps to be deer legal (with a little margin) in a ......wait for it 14" - 16" barrel ? I'd also consider 130g & 140g bullets. 95% of shots will be 50 - 150 yards - but hopefully if needed this would be a 200 yard gun. I have no interest in longer stuff - the 7mm-08 would come out for that. Any (fast) powders recommended would also be useful. I know it's a bit of an "out there" project but hopefully it'll work - with a nice Ase jetz compact on the end to tame the flash & balance things. Ronin
At 2600 fps a 123 scenar will generate 1846 ft lbs ME. Standard (average) velocities for these out of a 26" barrel is circa 2950 - 3000 fps using a variety of powders and warmloads. Lose 10" of barrel length and at a (guess) of 30 - 50 fps per inch: at 30 fps losing 10" =2650 fps At 50 fps losing 10" = 2450 fps Now afer guessing, ive run QL using a 120 Sierra SP under 39g Varget through a 16" barrel results: 1789 ft lbs and 2591 fps. Deer legal, but marginaly. Now, many, many people are using 6.5x47 for Deer in the UK, you would have no issues (I think) getting approval for a 6.5x47 on ticket. How you choose to have the rifle built is your choice....
