I just wondered what calls people use for their varmint calling. I personally use the 3 n 1 Acme hair call and find it takes some beating, i have used the Foxpro fx3 and found it very good but it was a friends and it had to go back befrore a thorough testing. So come on peeps what do you use?

I always use a Crit-R-cCall peewee, its the most versatile call i know. You can get a really good rabbit squeal, hare distress, bird and rodent chatters out of it. I never go shooting with out it and its called hundreds of foxes.

The last couple of foxes I have purposely sat out for ( and shot ) have been called in using the Hare ( jackrabbit distress ) on the Foxpro Scorpion.

I have also had very good success with the Pheasant Distress.

Mostly use the back of my hand for fox calling (cant lose it, or leave it at home  ), also use a foxcalluk reed call to get that extra range. I have also made a couple of electronic calls with mp3 players, amplifiers and a speaker, but just find them to much hassle to carry when lamping.

Last night, we called in and shot 3 cubs and a vixen using a squeaky rubber chicken dog toy that my mate had bought in a £ shop, all 4 were called to within 30yds, I wont post the pictures as they didn't look to pretty after meeting with a 87gn v-max

Cheers,

Jinks

Photobucket couldn't fit photos of all the calls I've picked up over the past couple of years  The best bit is I can't use most of them as they don't have a switch :D I really gotta pull the finger out on that front this summer.

I'm actually calling much much less this past year though.

I have four calls which have become favourites and are carried at all times:

Primos Pro Screamer (diaphragm type call)

An open reed call intended for deer which can produce various sounds which seem to attract foxes - rabbit, hare, etc.

Bulb Squeaker (originally bought for Roe calling very many years ago) perfect for close in foxes, brings 'em galloping.

The Squeaky Cloud - a baby toy requistioned from my grandson who has grown out of such things. Sort of oval cloud shaped thing with a squeaky insert again good for close work

Whilst I have yet to get one, I have been reliably informed that the Primos Catnip call is very good. The domestic moggie is one of Charlie's favourite foods, as you know.

I've also one of those electronic jobs, the Callmaster, and have found that the Cub Fight call, in particular, can pull 'em in from a long way.

I tend to use the Callmaster when intending to stay in one place for some time, hanging it on a branch about 20-30 yards away, switch on, sit back and wait.

Some of you may say I’m a gadget man (my family do) each call gets used and some to varying degrees, but I feel that all calls have there place, and on some nights, NO call will work.

First off we have what hopefully everyone here has, your hand. It takes some time to be able to get various sounds, but with practice (I recommend you do this when you are alone, either in your car or at home, or anywhere where you won’t be told to “WILL YOU SHUT UP”.) One tip i do have is make sure it's not the hand you pick the foxes up with once you have shot one

Then we have the the Foxpro FX3, and the most expensive call I have, and while some may think a bit extreme, this is a very useful piece of kit. I have used this twice since I have had it and it has accounted for a Fox that I feel I wouldn’t of got without it. This is simple to use, the difficult thing is choosing which sound to use.

Next we have the WAM call, and it has called in a few foxes since I’ve had it, easy to use, you can alter the volume, but it is hard to get a very high volume sound from it, but none the less a good call.

Myfoxcalls007.jpg

Here is my HOME MADE call, which I made many years ago, before you could purchase this call in plastic. I saw how to make one in a very old Gunmart, but they used an old wooden clothes peg. This I made out of a small hazel twig, which I split in half, slightly cut away a small groove from each, then placed a bit of plastic in the middle, secured it one end and then stretched it so it is taught and secured it the other end. By biting in the middle you can alter the pitch.

Here are two wooden calls from America, one was a Squirrel call with a rubber bulb at the end, but after a few years the rubber split and now I use it along with the larger one, blowing it in a cupped hand and by opening and closing my hand I get various sounds from them.

Now we have one I bought from Attleborough, and again a good call, you can also take the rubber tube off and use just the mouth piece. The good thing about this call is it double’s up as a Roe/Sika call too.

This one was on an old camping kettle, and while the volume isn’t that good the sound get’s the foxes interest and has brought a few in for me.

Ok, some of may wonder what the hell is this?? Well it’s a kids toy, but Primo’s do them specifically for Deer calling, and they have a pretty price tag to boot. This one cost me all of £2.50.

The idea came to me after watching Whistling foxes where on some of the foxes he shouts “Oi” or “Baaa”, and while getting a few foxes myself doing this, I thought why not get this, it’s a sound a fox has never heard and stops then for the shot.

Myfoxcalls006.jpg

This is the Primos Pro screamer, and it takes some getting used too, but once you master it, the range of sounds you can produce is left to you.

Myfoxcalls013.jpg

And lastly we have the Fulhaber hare call, and again, it seems to be a weird sound but it works, and I have called Hares in but not shot them.

I also have a Primo's mouse squeaker too, but can't seem to find it!!!!!!!

Bloody hell Kip thats like a collection from an Ann Summers PArty there :D

I have had a go at the old calling bit and I love the brass disc, I have an Adrea Gorgessqu call and a home made bar call.

I also have a rubber consetina call from Austrailia, its very loud and you can get some good tones from it.

I know the electric stuff is good but theres nothing better to getting a few charlies running towards you by calling by hand.

Andy ;)

Hi Spud I have pre programed mine so that I don,t have to serch for the call I want at any one time the calls are 005 Jackrabbit Distress 019 Adult Cottontail 023 Snowshoe 2 053 Worried Woodpecker

The first three work well but don,t over use them. ie dont use the same call every time you go out.

I surgest that you play all of the calls that you have on your caller do this at home not in the field and pick out the one,s that you think will suit . have fun Eric
