Andrew
The technique that Calhoon describes -measuring the head for expansion- has been used here for a very long time. For factory chamberings (meaning those in standard calibers) the method is to measure the head areas on ten new, factory cartridges with a very good micrometer: One that measures to the 10,000th of and inch. Fire these 10 rounds in your rifle then carefully measure the head expansion after firing and average them. Since factory ammo is usually loaded to SAAMI maximum pressures, this will be your maximum expansion allowed for that lot or brand of brass. If you switch components you must start over working up loads; which is one of the primary rules of handloading anyhow.~Andrew
