I had an 'Echo cardiogram' today to see if I had a small hole inbetween the top two chambers in my heart, they were looking for the reason that I had my stroke.I had to lie on a bench type bed on my left side, all the time wearing a load of electrodes on my chest and sides, while a doctor used an ultrasound machine to look at my beating heart on a screen.I was positioned so that I could see what was going on in a mirror on the wall,so I could see my heart and the blood flow on the computer screen,it was amazing I can tell you. They then put in a canular in my left arm, with a 3 way junction into which they plugged two syringes, one of which was filled with sterilized water. They then pulled a little blood out of my arm into the water, and, then theysquirted one syringe into the other and back again a few times to make the water frothy(bubbly)and then they squirted the frothy water into my arm, and,it entered the heart very quickly, and there was a leakage from my left chamber into the right one, which basically means that I have a hole in my heart.WOW!!!!! This does sound a bit scary, but, apparently 1 in 4 people have this hole,it is there in all babies while they are in the womb, and, once the baby is born then it usually seals itself. But,as I said some peoples never seal, and, this does not necessarily mean that all of those will go on to have a stroke, but,I did.Now hopefully, but,I am now waiting for confirmation,I will be sent to Bristol to have this hole sealed, they do this by putting a shunt into your groin area, and sending a fibre optic gizmo up through an artery into the heart, and, placing a bung of some sort into the hole, and, that with any luck will stop me from having any more of these bloody strokes..............fingers crossed anyway..........wish me luck.................martin.

Good luck Martin, it's good that they have found the likely cause and can treat it.

With that treatment your recovery time should be rapid in comparison to open heart surgery.

Cheers

Dave

Thanks everyone,I have just got back from the hospital, and, the consultant has referred me to the BRI in Bristol, and, she also said that not only is it a hole, but,it is a large hole,so it is almost certain that it was this that caused the stroke.I am now waiting for an appointment to meet the consultant in the BRI and arrange the operation.I have also been referred to a migraine specialist to see if she can help with my migraines. So,I am a happy man at the moment, with something tangible to look forward to....................thanks again.....martin.

Martin,

Glad to hear that they've found the reason for your health problems and hope all will be sorted very soon.

On the subject of migraines, my late wife suffered badly and we eventually tracked it down to chocolate. It took three years and was done by listing all of the food she ate daily and comparing the lists when she had an attack. I wonder if you had a migraine after that BIG slab of chocolate cake you ate on Sunday?

As you are going to have a hole in your heart plugged, don't forget to take some Araldite with you to hospital in case they run out.

Best of Luck, mate

Peter

Hi Martin

Hey you will be fine. The hole in the heart is called a patent foramen ovale or PFO for short and as you said they should seal up but don't in quite a few people. There was some research done a couple of years ago looking at migraine sufferers and seeing if it was connected to a PFO it turned out that it is in quite a few people. So plugging up the hole should sort out the stroke and the migraine at the same time.

Mike
