try dasherman off here, he done my rifle and a few other guys and were more than happy. I have only had one custom barrel, a pac-nor and after 8 months and over 1000 rounds I am over the moon with it , cleans so easily and is very accurate, it literally takes 3 wet patches for carbon to get out and there is no cooper at all ever, the only cooper I saw were on the first 3 shots down the tube. It shot 2 groups last week at 200 metres that looked no different to groups at 100m, I wasnt going to post these pics as I aint sure if anybody would believe these were shot at 200m but they honesly were, though I will concede off a front rest on a good calm night but even still I was gobsmacked.

Not sure what twist I would opt for, depends if you have a specific bullet in mind, although for out to 500 yards you probably would want a bullet with around a .250 bc just for starters, something like a 55g v-max/52g a-max or similar not sure how hard the .222 would push those though as I have no experience with the .222, I think even these bullets at 500 yards would be left wanting unless its calm. If you stepped up to the 75g a-max you would have a more capable long range bullet but then the .222 case might not push this hard enough to make use of it. I think If I was doing a .222 I would stick with a 1-14/1-12 and use 40/50g bullets but bring the range down to 350 yards or so, though I am sure there are plenty out there capable of using it at 500 yards but I probably am not. I would also stick a nice mac thumbhole lazzroni stock on it and a 20 inch barrel about .750 at the muzzle, would be lovely for carrying around, but the barrel would still be meaty looking because its quite short and there wont be much taper due to the small action face of the 461.

There is a good artical at present on 6BR about an old.223 Sako rebarreled to a 20, just neck down standard 223 cases to 20 and thats it. Called 20 Practical, gets 4000fps plus out of it using light bullets. That would buck the wind better than a .222, using a 1 in 9 twist and Berger 50 grainers you should have your 500 yard performer.

Guest dasherman

Got a new Pac-nor 20 cal 3groove 1:9 twist that was chambered in 20tac, was fitted to a Remy and then removed. Its only fired a proof shot, its in a Ruger Varmint profile, bead blasted and screwcut 1/2" unf and could be cheap!

Millpool, are you trying to take the p*ss?

You know perfectly well that I have a rebarrelled Sako L461 in 222 and have had some 'issues' with it and I suspect you are tempting me into a situation that enables you to point out that your standard Cz 223 outshoots my 222.

Just in case the question is serious, which I doubt, can I remind you that I bought a cheap Sako 222 on the lovely Vixen action and had it bluebrinted, rebarrelled with a PacNor Supermatch barrel and bedded into a McMillan stock all at a cost that I'm not prepared to reveal but was more than you think. It shoots OK, sort of, but there's always one or two outside an otherwise excellent group. My latest theory is that the main spring inside the bolt is too tight (it's quite hard to pull out when disassembling the bolt) and that as a result I'm getting inconsistent ingition. If I hadn't got bored with the whole thing I'd have sorted it out but I bought a Cz instead and fitted a 17 Ackley barrel on it - lots more fun.

Anyway, 222 is not suitable for 500 yards, buy a fast-twist 22-250 and use 75g Amax bullets.

Or then again you could buy my Sako, replace the spring and weyhey...........

my dear conishman it was as always a pleasure to see you at the range today, you have thrown me somewhat! i feel i must point out to you that i was unaware that you had done a number on your sako,or if you did tell me i had forgotton(happens when you get to my age) no p...s taking intented , i was in fact juggling with the idea of buying my old sako back from the dealer(where it still lerks in the bowles of his prestigious emporium going rusty) as it would only be good for the action,i am mortified that you feel that me of all people would take the p..s!,however i am now to upset to carry on with the project and will now stick with my cz223 (which i have to say is going like a demon) due to silents tricky loads! as far as buying your sako is concerned ii must point out that i am only a poor retired person and could not possibly afford your 222(even more so now that you tell me its not as good as my 223!!) hope to see you at the range soon,oh! almost forgot you have 24 hrs to retract your statment of me alledgedly taking the p..s before my solicitors from the well known firm of libel specialists ,sue ,leggit ,and scarper are speeding round to your gaff with a writ!!!!! :o:D:lol::lol:
