atlanticity
Hi guys this is my first post and i was wandering what I should have done to my rifle once the barrel has worn out.are their limitations to barrel length and profile bearing in mind that i want to shoot f class targets at 1000yards in an informal situation.excuse spelling and punctuation i dont know how to get capital letters on the i pad keyboard.as the title suggest it is a rem 700 in 308'any ideas most welcome
Ronin
Hi and welcome to the site. If its informal, then the 700 will be fine if rebarrelled to another 308, you don't say what stock you have at present, but so long as you can fit a bipod and use a rear bag with it, the gun will do for informal FTR. If you get serious, want to start competing, it won't. Forget about having it rebarrelled, You would need a dedicated FTR or F Open gun - Single shot action (stiffer than multi shot) and appropriate contour and length barrel and a stock that conforms to the regulations, plus either a front rest or bipod (wide bipod) and rear bag. Its a massive step from using a "standard" rifle to using a dedicated gun in both cost and personal dedication. If you like the idea of F Class, want to compete and have the available free funds - its by no means a cheap sport, then the ONLY way forwards is buy a dedicated rifle and go from there….you'll also need a suitable scope, a forgiving partner and a work pattern that allows fridays and weekends away ……. Not putting you off, thats the way it is..

gbal
Hi,Ronin's advice is sound.Don't do anything in a hurry-there are different competitions-even within the f class category. One does necessitate a 308,but not just any 308.Or others thee are better cartridges. The good news is that the 308 is a pretty sound all round jack of most trades cafrtridge, though master of none, except where the rules mandate it.It is unlikely to wear out anytime soon-they are good for thousands of rounds (not typical of the specialist numbers),so you have time aplenty to find out about your options.Nr is it the most pleasant cartridge to shoot ,especially in fractoryrifles-but you will learn the most important skill in shooting-reading the wind. Can't be bought, and without it everyone fails. Meanwhile think of an upgrade for your ipad-like a logitech keyboard (well under £100) which transforms the iPad into laptop format-and makes the ridiculous membrane keyboard history(tho' it's still there!) Read "Accurate Shooter" site, salivate and learn, while you enjoy Long Ranging your 308.There is great choice,so take some time.Enjoy! gbal
