maltbuck
A question for the "smiths"/metalurgists if I may. Colour case hardening - does it confer an increased corrosion resistance to an action, and if so to what extent compared to the various coatings / stainless? Also would a "coated" bolt running in a case hardened action present any issues? Reason being I am considering a Mauser M03 Classic, which has a case hardened action with a nitrided bolt. Many thanks, MB.
terryh
MB As far as 'colour case hardening' goes that I've owned has never been regarded as any form of significant protection, it is just a nice finish resulting from a heat treatment process. Doug Turnbull does a nice job of this. http://www.turnbullmfg.com/gun-category/gun-gallery/rifles-winchester/ And ai believe he uses the traditional bone and carbon rather than the latter day Cyanide? Do not think colour case hardening either prevents or promotes gauling if dissimilar materials are run over it? Looks nice though? T
