deadcenter
Hi guys, picked up a bunch of once fired .308 cases, some of them have straight raised marks along their length. You can easily feel them with your fingers. Evenly spaced around the case. What causes them and what have they been fired in? Head stamp says FC 308 WIN. Picked up some .223 police fired brass once that was similar.
brown dog
They've been fired in an HK (fluted chamber).
gbal
They've been fired in an HK (fluted chamber). Yep,fluted to use some gas blow back to make extraction ...err....positive,in self loaders. Often a tad ''sooty' too, though wipes off,no harm done (especially as it won't be repeated!) FC may be 'Federal Cartridge"-often a police purchasing choice.
DaveT
Guess that these will 'blow out' at next firing?
gbal
Dave ,I would think so-they were little more than fine scratches from the H&K 91/93 s,as I recall, but I wasn't reloading them.If the "extraction advantage" was cumulative,I'd imagine most would be lost-before they were worn out-they went quite some way ! gbal
Thankyou gentleman, I knew this would be the place to ask. Interesting. You will still find a manual assist extraction plunger on AR15s- as perhaps a recognition that military weapons might have less than ideal operating conditions-dirt,variable ammo and cleaning etc? H&K also tried polygonal bore, rather than rifling,in the conventional sense-though for different reasons. Also very experimental case less ammo (no brass) -but that didn't work out. gbal
