22cf
I am thinking of having a Tikka 595 switch barrel built in 22-250 and 6mmbr, is this do able and is the 595 a good action to base it on ?
baldie
No. Tikka,s are not a good action to base a switch barrel on as their tenon diameter to action diameter is very small. Taking them on and off will "bell" the barrel shoulder rapidly.
gbal
Dave, thank you for a clear, informed answer to the specific Tikka switch barrel idea. Are there any factory actions which would be a more successful choice for switch barrel (Sako 75,or earlier,Remington,Tikka 55,Ruger 77....or is the tenon issue fairly generic in factory rifles, both sporter and 'varmint' weight? I'd envisage barrel changes maybe half a dozen times per year, maybe less...does that change things? g
baldie
Pick an action with a separate recoil lug, then get it pinned. It gives a greater surface area generally for the barrel shoulder. Sako,s and tikka,s generally only have 0.100" [0.050" per side ] over tenon diameter. Its enough to lock them up, but will be quickly ruined by repeated removal. Remingtons have more, as do most clone actions.
