Vixen by the river

Went for a walk with my 8 year old daughter along a river.

It's a bit of an awkward place for the rifle because only a few places

allow a bit of a view without shooting on the horizon.

We walked downriver through a forest and back around the forest.

The good fields where occupied by cattle. So we ended up on the corner of the forest

with about 70yds shooting along a ditch to the left and about 40 yards to the front to

have a good backstop. The view to the front had twigs in the way too, what the hell

gave it a screach. A fox came out of the forest from the right about 40yds and looking right at us.

Told the girl to freeze and didn't dare to pick up the rifle. The fox then decided to look around

and moved towards us. I picked up the rifle and waited until the fox would come out from behind

some branches, saw it again at 20yds. Very healthy young vixen no milk.

Nice going edi, nothing like a walk with a gun when it turns out good.

Thanks for the replies,

craig, at least I didn't loose a rooster

I didn't think I'd see anything that eve, no wind, we were too loud,

cows in the wrong fields and had to back by 9 .

Then the more I practice long range, the closer the foxes are. A week or

two ago called one in to 3yds, didn't get him though.

Dave, the place is about 8 miles inland and still tidal. Never fished that area, further

up river I caught brown trout and at the estuary plenty sea trout, biggest 2ft.

Forget ground fishing to much small fry. Many otters, seals, dolphins and the odd

kingfisher buzzing around. We had just chased off a flock of shell duck from the field.

Jimmy, my daughter enjoyed watching a fox getting so close to us, couldn't believe it.

22-250 also works well at 20yds. ;)

Pat, at least we have no mossies, I presume you have

winged aligators on the misspissi.

Missed a rat the other day at about 4 yds, only saw fuzz in the scope. can't have it all.

My daughter comes along every now and again, she has great eyes.

Also wants me to disect pheasant and duck after cutting the breasts out, likes to have every detail

explained. My two sons have other interests at the moment, although the elder is quite handy with

his 12ga.
