drum
Looking for advice as to what to do with a tikka t3 that has developed bad pitting in the bore at least 3.5 inches from the muzzle back down the barrel. The person who,s rifle it is wants to cut the barrel back to try and get to good rifling free of pitting, how much , realistically, can you remove from a 243 ,both legally and still be left with a usable rifle? If the barrel is written of,how much is t3 action worth? The rifle is a t3 sporter with a 20 inch barrel, fired less than 200 bullets. Will be interested to hear other peoples views on this. MrCetrizine
Have they been leaving a moderator on it? That's guaranteed to ruin the muzzle end. I'd have it re-barrelled with a nice 24".
Foxshooter
I wouldn't cut it shorter than 20" Not much help if its only 20" to start with!! Why sell the action, wouldn't it be easier to spend a few hundred pounds on a nice new barrel, someone might even have a take off barrel from a Tikka Mark
drum
Possibility that its been caused by moderator, but personally i think the pitting goes too far down the barrel for moderator pitting, possibly caused by lamping during the cold nights ,taking the rifle into a warm house and not drying it internally before putting it away, but who knows. She is trying to save the rifle to spare the expense of having to get another one.Funds been tight and all that. What price would you be looking at for one of the cheaper barrels,a bergara perhaps, fitted and proofed etc and roughly how long would it take? MrCetrizine
I'm sure one of the many awesome smiths that live here can answer that better than anyone.
