.300wm
Hi all, I have a surplus of CCI magnum large rifle primers, no.250 I believe. I was wondering if it's ok to use these in my .243? There are plenty of differing opinions regarding this on U.S forums and would like some sound advice. Regards.
sonic
Personally I wouldn't they are designed to light much bigger powder charges, You do not need them for normal powders loads in 243. For the cost of primers I wouldn't bother. If you must get rid of your surples swap/sell them with/to someone who needs them.
EMcC
I use magnum primers in my .243 because the powder I use is H380 and not particularly fast but does a marvelous job when lit with magnum primers. In fact I use magnum primers in most of my reloads/calibres and have done for more than thirty years without problem. I find it makes all powders burn clean. Ratwhiskers
Mag' primers equate to 1 grain of powder, so it's easy to back off then work up..... I've found Viht 150 tends to like some Mag' primers.
.300wm
Thanks for the replies. Think I will just buy some normal primers to be safe.
fizzbangwhallop
I've used CCI lr magnum primers with H414 and 70grn Nosler BT's in my .243's over the years and it works very well - queried it with Mick at NC's a few years ago and he confirmed that the Magnums were good to get a clean ignition in the H414.
