ricky5042
Hi all here goes the results from my 155gn Lapua scenars with elcho 17 first an average velocity and best accuracy: 45.5gns 2570fps .357", 46.0gns 2601fps .177", 46.5gns 2610fps .741", 47.0gns 2630fps .975", 47.5gns 2718fps .735", 48.0gns 2740fps .356", 48.5gns 2792fps .948", 49.0gns 2803fps .322" 49.5gns 2811fps 1.222", Rick
Wildcat69
There are some really good groups but pressure signs? Are you going to try some other powders?
ricky5042
Hi wildcat69 no pressure signs which was good as the higher loadings were compressed and because of that im not going to go any higher so once iv finished the elcho 17 I will give the TR140 (N140) a try as I keep being told it is more suited to the 308 with the 155gn heads im using. I am at bisley on Saturday on the 300 yard range so il take the load from the 2 best groups and see how they do at the longer range. Rick
Wildcat69
I would say that to. N140 would be better from a velocity point of view and you wouldn't need so much powder. I have tried RL 17 on 185gr and I was way short on velocity, I was short of about 70fps compared with the same load of N150. N150 did give the edge and now I wouldn't look back. I have a 2 pounds left but will keep it for next project.
ricky5042
Hi N150 was what my friend mark picked up last time at bisley and he is using it for 308 as well, im shooting with him on Saturday so il ask if hes used it yet and if so how he got on. Wildcat69
Yes, good idea. Well it's a good mid weight bullet powder but with 155s I would prefer N140. But you can try N150 with some MV improvement compared to El 17. Good luck.

Dark Star
Elcho 17 becomes really useful when you use the heavy bullets (200gn+) as you can get really useful velocities at manageable pressures. I think you'll find you'll get better results overall and especially at longer ranges with TR140 if you're sticking to a 155gn bullet.
ricky5042
Hi I am going to try the 168gn A-max to see how they go but yes im going to try TR140 as its cheaper and should give me better velocities, if the 168gns don't give me better accuracy I will be sticking to the 155gns Rick
gbal
Hi I am going to try the 168gn A-max to see how they go but yes im going to try TR140 as its cheaper and should give me better velocities, if the 168gns don't give me better accuracy I will be sticking to the 155gns Rick Rick:Save yourself time and barrel wear-read Laurie's extensive and comprehensive tests of bullets and powders with 308. The 168 A max is fine for shorter ranges, usually, but is not a 1000 yard choice. !85 scenars or 190 matchkings would be better-around 43.5 g Vi40 gave 2550fps and !/2 moa-but there are heavier and better chioces now .As ever, rifles are individuals and work up to loads carefully. For long ange you do need better than transonic, velocity,as long as its safe. You do not need max velocity for 300y,and will probably shoot better by reducing a bit. With the 155g old shape palmas, (a viable 1000,certainly good for 300) 45 g V140 were enough to shoot well (half moa, typical). V140 is a no compromise at all powder for 308.Don't chose on the basis of a few pounds cost per k rounds if you want the best results, but it is nice when the best is a bit less (V140 clone TR140 should be just as good, too). kent
155's are fine for use out to 1000 yards at 2800 fps. A lot depends on conditions, getting two's and three's and that sort of speed sounds ok IF THE GUN HOLDS ITS ACCURACCY at more appropriate ranges. can talk all day about heavier bullets etc but what do they print in YOUR GUN?
