Strangely Brown
The Schmidt '30 year' belief comes from people misunderstanding S&B's undertaking to be able to repair a scope (ie hold the parts and know-how) for 30 years. I believe an EU directive is responsible for the demise of the 30 warranty. Swarovski on their newly designed products now offer only a ten year warranty. I have seen limited 30 year warranties where the manufacturer will offer a full five or ten year warranty on say a pair of binoculars, and free parts should one of them fail for the next 20 or 25 years. On the rare occaisions where I have had to oblige a customer under these conditions we have invaribly had a replacment closest to the model concerned sent back to us.
