Recoil control, new possibilities.

As usual we are looking to find ways of improving the handling or behaviour of a rifle with the design of our stocks.

The developement of our ulta light carbon stocks lead to new ideas such as placing weights into a stock while manufacturing mainly to improve recoil behaviour. We all know a heavy rifle will mostly lead to less felt recoil but we also know that often a big part of that weight is unnessecary or might even increase muzzle flip. We know recoil is a force that runs along the direction of the bore, if the centre of mass is below the line of recoil then we'll have muzzle flip. If the recoil pad is located low on the butt then the muzzle flip will increase.

Two recent projects, first a remington 700 in 300WM, The customer didn't like the composite tactical stock which didn't suit his hill hunting but was worried about the recoil with our ultra light hunting stock. After long discussions we settled on a finished weight of a bit under one kilogram with the idea of using the weight to the benefit to reduce recoil. Stock lay up was planned to normal ultra light which would be around 700 grams but we added some extra layers to the upper section of the stock and then bedded 200 grams of lead into the highest area of the stock comb, well glassed into position. Later an extra soft and slightly thicker butt pad was fitted. Final weight of the stock is 975 grams. 100grams lighter than a HS. Holding the stock one really noticed that it was top heavy. We also added a little "shnickshnack".... We tested the rifle last Sunday, side on view showed very little or no muzzle flip, only thing I noticed was that the rifle seemed to tourque to the left on the bipod. Customer was very happy.

Parallel to the remmy we made a T3 stock for target shooter from Germany. They have some competition that has certain weight limit meaning with all his other gear he could use a stock that weighed around 1400 grams. We suggested to internally add weight to a very light carbon fibre stock, weight could be added in the comb and left & right of the barrel channel. Solid lead and lead shot was used and mixed with epoxy resin to keep in place. This stock was very unusual to hold in the hand because the weight being so obviously lop sided.

Red where we added around 700 grams of weight. His stock only arrived in Germany today.
