Guest Sprags
I was unsure where to post this to be honest but hey, here goes. I will be collecting my .17hmr next week and I openly admit I know very little about this calibre other than it wrecks rabbits at close range What I want to know is this, what should I zero it at? I have heard some stories of people setting the zero at 50yds , I was gonna go for 1 inch high at 100yds, what do you fella's reckon? Oh, it will be used for rabbit, crows and the like,...................Oh, and the odd charlie!! Regards,........and thanks, Sprags!!
Andrew
I have three HMR's and all of mine are sighted in 1/2" high at 100. This gives a 3" (+/-) hold over at 150 :Which is the practical max for tis cartridge on game, IMO. ~Andrew
Guest 308Panther
At the moment I am using a 50 yrd zero....and even there it is still good out to 100 yrds...wich is about the farthest I push it on anything larger then a squirrel or rabbit.... I taken squirrel at 120yrds easy enough and would fell pretty confident enough that its good out to 150 yrds on squirrels or bunnies...but on fattier bodied animals like raccoon, groundhogs,or more muscular/boney like fox or coyote my limit is still 100 yrds and it would be a head shot or no shot. The 17gr bullet can be a touch flighty in winds and the 20gr hollowpoints dont shoot the same even tho they do ride the wind better they seem to drop quicker then the balistic tipped ones.....I only tried one box of them and wasnt that impressed with the hollow point version. The velocity isnt the same. Its a great lil critter caliber if you understand it has limitations. It does very little damage to the fur and I havent needed a second shot unless the first shot was a complete miss. But you are not gonna kill varmints at 300,or 400 yrds with it. There just isnt enough mass in the lil bullet to store or keep the energy needed to get enough penetration or to make the balistic tip work the way it should. I have pushed mine out to 500yrds on targets.....and it does make the neatest "Tick" sound when it hits the targetboard, and that tick is just as addicting as droppin a squirrel at 120 yrds... Good Luck with your new rifle. 308Panther
Dave-G
I have a 100 yd zero for my Quad's 17. It's secondary zero is 52 yards and I am within 1" out to 125 yards. That is with a 15" barrel and Remmies. This incidently is minus 32 clicks on my elevation turret than the .22lr which is zero'd at 52 yards when I change barrels. Andrew
Ok. I'll bite. Why 35 yards? And wouldn't it depend on the height of your scope above the bore?~Andrew
nico243
Ok. I'll bite. Why 35 yards? And wouldn't it depend on the height of your scope above the bore?~Andrew apologies in advance for any spelling mistakes etc, I watched the rugby and drank rather a lot while doing so Optimum zero is 35yds secondary zero is bang-on @ 125 and maximum elevation between the two is +0.9", so in a nut shell a 35yds zero will allow you to to aim bang on for everything from 35yds upto 125yds, now that is pretty flat, even for a rimmy!! nico243
I will post a full chart @ 35yds, but right now I can't be arsed, well at least I'm honest
Guest 308Panther
Optimum zero is 35yds secondary zero is bang-on @ 125 and maximum elevation between the two is +0.9", I was wondering about that...and figured it to be around there,well...ok the number I had in mind was more like 110,once ya mentioned the word optimum. Wich ammo were/are you using and how where you able to determine this? I am not questioning your methods so much as I question the velocity variances between brands of ammo, wich will have a big effect on the 2ndary zero. 308Panther
