  1. Finally got to zero my new Ultra light 6.5 CM . We managed to get a 20" 6.5 Hardy carbon barrel which only weighs 1.2kg, and old Remmy action and my son made me an experimental ultra light E-Tac4 stock that only weighs 820 grams. ~29Oz.  Schmidt sent us a 3-27x56 with Tremor3 and the new Spuhr 20Moa Rail as well as Spuhr 10MOA one piece mount, Triggertech trigger. That mount is a bit high for this rifle but I just had it. Moderator needed a bit of tweaking on the lathe to go over the 24mm Hardy barrel. The bare rifle weighs just under 6.7lbs, scope with mount is quite heavy but what a brilliant optic. The only ammo I had for zero and initial chrono was the Sako TRG 136gr Scenar. I chronoed all 15 shots. First few shots had 75fps ES which seems to be tightening up to 30's in the last 7 rounds. I will repeat again once the barrel is worn in  a bit. Shooting off the Land Rover hood close to the sea is not the best but the last three shots in my 5 shot group tightened up nicely. So far very happy with the rifle as well as the 6.5CM which is running average 2730fps with the 136gr from a 20" barrel, around 1100m supersonic.

  2. Hope to have two 6.5Creed rifles ready by mid summer, one with a 20" Hardy the other with a 24" Hawk Hill Marksman also 1/8. My bet is on the Hawk Hill but we'll see. Big weight difference, the hardy barrel in raw only weighs in at 1.2kg. Will be a tactical rifle with similar weight of a T3 Lite.

  3. One of the lads here came in midfield result in a National F Class shoot with his Hardy carbon barrelled hunting rifle in 7RM.

My first carbon barrel also a Hardy will be fitted next week. We will see. I still think it adds another bit to the puzzle and for comps my take is the standard steel barrel would be safer.

Is there a link to Josh's website or price list?

Recently a guy I know well from Luxembourg received his Christensen rifle. He is a bit disappointed in the performance, said it might go again.

    Thanks again gents,

For a release agent would there be any issues using Ambersil silicon mould release agent?

Obviously taping off and covering any parts not intended for the bonding area and giving it a really good solvent clean afterwards.

    Cheers

I have seen tears in the eyes of those that used mould release agent that was made for plastic injection moulding. Mould release agent for hot thermo plastic it is not made for composites . I don't know which type you have but if it is the injection moulding type you should be careful.  Clear Kiwi shoe wax applied twice normally works well.

We never... ever tape off parts for bedding as epoxy can creep under the tape unseen. We use an epoxy with long pot life and wipe off excess resin. WD40 on a rag or cotton bud for final removing of traces before curing that is.

  5. I also think stainless is the way to go.

Assumptions of good or bad steel/carbon steel/what stainless is BS, only if one analyses will one know what steel it is or what it contains. I have one Lothar Walther normal steel barrel that produces a brown patch after one day stalking in the rain. You can't reliably keep rust out of that barrel. I say again the worst thing (for protection reasons) one can do is Cerakote the barrel giving you a sense of corrosion protection which is not the case inside the bore.

Malxwal, one hears a lot of bad things about WD40 mainly by those who try to sell other things. They will even tell you it contains silicone. One chap in Germany did tests with varies corrosion protection sprays/liquids and WD40 ended up as being one of the better ones. WD40 like many other corrosion protection sprays only give a temporary protection but reliably protect if applied after X time. X in relation to how bad the surroundings are.

  6. Their might be differences in the bluing but I don't believe Tikka deliberately uses low quality steel, just as i wouldn't believe it from other companies. Steel rusts, rusts quicker with salts around. A rifle that is extremely prone to rusting might have something on the surface to promote rust. I wash the complete barrelled action, mag, trigger (stock separately) with very hot soapy water and rinse well. Then after quick blow off with the air gun I flush with WD40 inside and out. Wipe off. After an outing just spay with wd40. Those who hate WD40 can find an alternative product or just leave it rusting.

This year at the IWA I had a discussion with the Sako product manager about rust on rifles, he said they don't use an ordinary steel for their blued rifles with emphasis on less corrosion. Not sure if there was a change in what is being used in the last years.

Cerakote/DuraCoat will reduce or stop rust where the paint is applied but the rifle will happily rust away in places we can't look and no paint is applied.

  7. We manufacture the E-Tac4 carbon fibre stocks for S&L that go on the Tactical or Victory. Not sure if they are sold in the UK though. Never heard of anyone having one. They are popular for competitions / LR hunting in northern countries and possibly LE.

I think the aluminium Tactical action is absolutely fantastic, integrated 20MOA rail very light weight but can also be had in steel as far as I know. The Bolts lock into the barrels which are possibly the only cut barrels in factory rifles. Due to the locking mechanism in the barrel they don't use stainless steel as a barrel material. When I was at the company in Denmark it was astonishing how well bolts would be able to fit from one rifle to the next. They run very tight tolerances on barrel lugs and bolts so that these are interchangeable. Triggers are also fantastic.

Stocks are all steel pillar bedded and single row steel mags and steel floor plates are used. The only thing I would criticize is that a tactical rifle should have a mil approved mag system such as AI type mags or from the TRG.

  8. Got the bits together for my next build.

Based on a stainless T3 action fitted with a 3 groove Lilja 308 1/13 barrel cut at 22"

Not sure about bottom metal yet, Standard plastic, or alu for standard mags or AI type. We'll see.

ASH 3 pos safety will be fitted and carbon bolt handle needs shaping. Steel recoil lug of course.

Prototype stock only weighs 620 grams raw including cheek piece, recon under 800 grams complete.
