Sign me up, it sounds like fun! The biggest thing that appeals to me with the NRL Hunter series is the opportunity to master a lightweight rifle with a high power factor. That would be something to consider.

My concern having looked at the NRL hunter rules and regulations would be the definition of what is a "hunting rifle".

I can speak for myself and a few others I stalk with in saying most of our "lightweight" rifles for woodland work are coming in at 13-15lb all in, with hill rifles ranging from 15-22lbs, this would mean by their definition most of us couldn't use our true stalking rifles due to being overweight with them?

To me the SIS Dynamic was a perfect mix where people can use anything they deem fit but were limited by practicality of carrying and overall fitness, it certainly made you consider what kit you actually need rather than just want?

I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic and know from speaking to Helen and Marc they have big plans for it going forwards, pushing that alternative style of practical match. I will certainly be clearing my diary to shoot it!

🤣 Well at least you tried...

Shot placement was not perfect, but far from bad. And actually the .338lm didn't made it any easier since at the time I was shooting 300gr Lapua scenar bullets which are not for hunting use. I learned it the hard way. Later I switched to Berger hunting bullets that are much better.

I had longer shots than that with similar shot placement using 6,5x55 but with Hornady 143gr eldx. Most deer droped in its tracks... In the end I have to say that the .338lm is not that much deadly than something smaller. I belive that using correct bullets is of bigger importance...

With all due respect there are few shots worse, gut shot maybe as well as brisket. I would re evaluate your statement of 'far from bad'.

    See the source image

You should ideally for a chest shot be much lower in the body, you barely creased the deer. The shot made was obviously fatal in this case, but that sort of injury is painful and a deer can survive that sort of wound for prolonged periods. It is certainly not a guaranteed fatal shot with where it hit.

If you wish to drop a deer on the spot you will have a greater margin for error with going through both shoulders, slightly forward of the shown aiming point, but on the same level (ref. Broadside example).

  3. Hi Guys,

I have an MDT ESS chassis for a Tikka T3 S/A that is surplus to my requirements now.
It is a 15" no rail fore-end, fixed elite stock (as found on the ACC, not the standard ESS) with the ESS arca adapter, 10.25" Arca rail, buttstock weight with an MDT buttstock weight and an MDT Elite grip.

It has been an ace chassis and one that I very much like.
I am only selling it as I have recently purchased an MDT ACC chassis which suits the competition-focused shooting my rifle does even better.

I am looking for £950 ONO for the chassis with all the Arca and grip etc as a package, which is a significant saving seeing as this package would be £1150+ new plus there's no wait time!

Alternatively I would be prepared to split it into the components as follows:

ESS Chassis, elite buttstock and ESS specific ARCA adaptor: £875

    10.25” ARCA plate: £50

    MDT Elite Grip: £60

    MDT buttstock weight: £45

But ideally the chassis must go first before I sell the other parts separately.

I would be prepared to p/x with a Tikka T1X or a Schmidt Bender PM2

Just to confirm the MDT Cyke Pod is NOT for sale nor included.

  4. Okay, so it seemed like maybe it was time to finally write up this awesome build that Bowland Custom did for me a couple of years ago – I meant to do it after a hundred rounds or so, but I’ll admit I got very side tracked by how lovely it was to shoot and well, here we are!

So this rifle was one that was originally built to be a hybrid rifle, both a deer stalking rifle for clear fell as well as a more target orientated rifle compared to the .308 Win which is my woodland stalking rifle that @Ronin also built. It was decided that a 24" medium Palma Border-Sasson cut rifle barrel would fit the rifle excellently and a 6.5x47L was a familiar chambering to myself which I had seen be extremely effective it seemed like the obvious choice.

The action chosen was a shot out Tikka T3 which was cleaned up by Andy, the trigger lightened and fettled and finally was mated with a McMillan A3-5 stock after being cerakoted, the end result being this (apologies for the less than great photos):

It suited the purpose to a T, with it being light weight enough to carry for a long period of time and incredibly accurate so as to cover the possible longer shots and the target aspect.

Now after shooting some groups with the rifle it was just ace, I was definitely the limiting factor in the setup, which is exactly what I wanted, like always Andy had produced a stunner!

A few months after having the rifle built it was mentioned to me about shooting the Gardners Guns PRS shoot, which took place in May 2019, it was something which I was definitely up for doing and I certainly learnt a lot from the experience, both about long range marksmanship and about myself. It was safe to say  after that the competitive precision rifle bug had truly bitten and I was raring for the more events, the next of which was in Sept of the same year. At the following shoot I again had a great time, but was much more competitive that time, being able to hold my own with the more experienced shooters having learnt from my previous experience and really being able to use some of the rifles ability. One thing which did strike me at the point though was the difference between the chassis options and the ‘traditional’ stocked rifles, I just felt like the chassis route had a lot more to offer in terms of adjustability as well as recoil control. So I saved a few pennies and ordered an MDT ESS chassis  which as soon as it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. It was everything I had hoped with umpteen adjustments in pretty much every plane you could desire, it had turned my hybrid rifle into a competition rifle!

    image.thumb.png.9d5f82687d4a9ee3d0968feb7f742ae5.png

From that point the changes came pretty quickly, from changing the factory trigger to a Timney two stage to buying a Fortmeier bipod. Then as we all know COVID hit, this gave me ample time to prepare for the next match which would take place in July 2020. At this next shoot I managed to place joint 3rd with the rifle, to put it simply it just hammered! The rifle was just ace to shoot!

     image.thumb.png.c24854adf56d1f599de813dff14d615a.png

Now since then I have changed a few bits again, between getting a MDT elite vertical grip to a Cyke pod and Arca Rail as well as changing the scope and getting the bolt fluted by Paddy Dane, but it still shoots bug hole tiny groups as shown below – I have no doubt it is capable of better in the right hands, but this is what I have managed. I have various other targets where it has done the same on other days so it is very consistent in its precision!

    image.thumb.png.07d86f4f84a7c0d0ee9b4c53e327c49b.png

Now through all that change the barrelled action has been the one constant, I wouldn’t change it at all and the repeatability of the results is a testament to Andy’s hard work and meticulousness when rebarrelling these creations. I cannot recommend him highly enough if you are looking for any kind of custom rifle to be built. There is certainly no coincidence that whenever rifles built by him are shot some tiny groups appear downrange!

  5. Hi All,

I have a fortmeier bipod which I have used for about a year or so now, it is in very good condition and is currently set up as a top mounted configuration, despite it being a type B bipod originally. I still have the handle to convert back to type B, however I am currently using it with a bolt instead of the handle to allow it to be top mounted.

I am looking for £250 ONO for this as to buy it new it would be over £300 to buy this bipod and picatinny mount new.

    ATB,

    Ben

  6. Hi All,

I'm currently running a .300 WSM, using 130Gr TTSXs going 3650 FPS, however I'm looking for a bullet I can carry as a backup for any longer range shots that may need taking on deer (in exceptional circumstances).

I have looked at the 200Gr ELD-X which according to quick load should be doing roughly 2850-2950FPS with RS70, however having looked at the stability calculator with the 1-11" twist barrel the bullet is showing a not optimally stable, however it may be usable.

The rifle is a factory Tikka barrelled action, with a 24" barrel, has anyone got any experience with the bullets in a similar twist barrel, have you found it to be accurate or would it need a 1-10" or faster as recommended?

    Many thanks,

    Ben

  7. Hi Guys,

Has anyone used these, I'm currently running an MDT chassis with an Arca rail section and I'm wondering if this would be a good tripod to look at, the hog clamp would possibly be useful for some of my other rifles if required.

The rifle weighs over 22lbs so its by no means light and hence it limits the options with regards to tripods.

    Any opinions would be appreciated!

    Ben
