While I'll happily engage Fig11's with mine when it's built, I wouldn't dare try take deer at anything beyond what I'd do with my 260, being honest.

In something like the 338lm I would expect a big exit/damage with a 250 is grain ballistic tipped bullet.i seen a few big exits with 180gr sst's with a 30 -06.soon stopped using them.

That's where bullet choice comes in....

A traditional lead softpoint with a thicker jacket, possibly a harder lead alloy in the core, which expands less rapidly, will do much less damage.

I've shot many a critter with my .260 with bullets like the 95gr Vmax, or 130 TMK, and they are absolutely devastating. I've also hit corvids with a 308, with 175 Matchking, and you'd never even know they'd been shot.....I struggled to find either entry or exit on some examples.

Obviously you wouldn't shoot deer with anything other than expanding ammo, but some bullets expand more rapidly than others.

Great post Cumbrian, and a point I was trying to get across, but perhaps not very well.

A bullet that fails to stop in it's target is only dumping a fraction of the energy it's carrying. The majority of the bullets energy is dumped into the backstop.

I'd guess, assuming a similar bullet construction(ie, a traditional softpoint), there is only a finite amount of energy a carcass will absorb, before the bullet exits. I'd be very, very surprised if the energy absorbed is that much greater when hit with a 338 over a 308 - assuming it exits which in both cases they almost certainly will. Infact, I'd bet it's possible that a smaller calibre, or lighter bullet that is more likely to stop, could impart more energy on the target, than a big heavy round that zip's on through.....

However, change bullet construction, to say a ballstic tip, and it'd be entirely different.

I dont even have to state land where I shoot ,it seems to be completely open.

My rifles are conditioned for quarry, no mention of where I can shoot them, just anywhere with permission.

I had a brief conversation with the lady who deals with my variation and the 338 was for target only.the daft thing is who would know if you did take it across the fields.

My neighbours would, not planning on a mod for now, even if I do have a slot for it.

I guess some Forces are very pedantic , I`ve got a collection of arms including muzzle loading revolvers , .22lr ,.22wmr, .204 , 45-70 , sect 1 shotgun, 308. etc etc, my FAC just states

 

"The firearms and ammunition shall be used for shooting vermin and ground game/fox/deer and any other lawful quarry and for zeroing on ranges , or land and over which the holder has authority to shoot"

 

No other conditions except a bit of waffle about expanding ammo , I`m confident I`d get a 338 if I wanted one with no restrictions , I have held an FAC for more than 25 years so maybe I`m now deemed responsible

I know plenty of people with the same, if you ask for *one* of your guns to shoot over land with, the whole let get opened up for use on land....mad.

I too have .22lr conditioned for fox and deer.....that made me giggle. I had the centrefires conditioned for Deer/fox/aolq and they just dumped the .22 into the same conditions when I asked for it.

I would like to witness a cold bore shot at a mile inside a 10 inch kill zone of a red deer silohette target.unless there was not a breath of wind but still very unlikely I think.there is plenty of 338lm owners on ukv.maybe one of them could jump in.

No one other than the OP has even suggested taking long range shots on live quarry.......

It is legal, so why not? Other than potential meat damage, what reasoning can you give someone not to?

And as I also stated earlier in the thread, having a rifle(any rifle in any calibre) conditioned to shoot over land, makes load development, zeroing and some degree of practice much more practical.

Did I ever state that it'd be my go-to stalking rifle that I'd shoot everything from munty to red's with? No....but I would atleast like to use it in anger on occasions, if the opportunity came up.

I know people that have 308's and 30/06 conditioned for fox and aolq...... 30/06 is running just shy of 3000 ft/lbs....red deer is considerably bigger than a fox, and 338 runs at 5000 ft/lbs or so with 300grainers. A fox weighs what, 10kg? A red could weigh 200+? But shooting foxes with big 30cals is 'ok'?

If it came down to what was enough for the task, we'd all be running around with .222's or less for fox, and 243's for deer.....

Ive no issue with 338 Lap but wheres the sense in destroying the meat ? I do take issue with ultra long shots as not everyone is upto to it and then we end up with maimed deer wandering around , I`ve dispatched two this year , both had been shot in the leg and couldnt walk properly , no idea what rifle the half wits had used , a keeper mate has had deer on his estate with jaws blown off as well , its very possible none of these were shot with a 338 but the odds on guaranteed shot placement get higher with big distances which is what 338s are meant for and encourage.

I don't disagree with your sentiment about long range shots. See my comments with regards to 'aslong as it's humane'.

Theoretically yes as the range is privately owned and has a maximum m/e of 7,500 Joules, however we currently work using HME limits and don't exceed them. We actually have one member who owns a Steyr SSG 08, but it's never been used at Cawdor.

 

I suspect that my FEO is aware of this. To be honest I'm not going to push it as there is nowhere I can shoot it locally and being disabled I'm not prepared to travel long distances just to shoot a big banger occasionally. I also have a very good working relationship with my FEO and don't wish to jeopardise this, plus there are other things I'd rather spend my meagre boomstick fund on.

We've a similar situation at Blairadam with our club it'd seem. Range orders allow for up to 5500ish ft/lb's of muzzle energy, 338 is doing about 5000..... But there is a reluctance to allow HME to be shot within the club.

In reality, 500 yards, or 600 in your guy's case is hardly scraping the surface for the 338, but it's valuable trigger time, and fun......

I don't buy that one - the media nor the general public couldn't give a monkey's if its a 308, or a 338 - they wouldn't like the fact you're shooting bambi's full stop.

I don't disagree its a huge cartridge to take deer with, I've never argued otherwise. Aslong as it's humane, and safe, and within the realms of the law I can't see the 'issue' though. Other than as per usual, 'other' shooters don't like the idea, so it must be a bad thing.....

Dead is dead, how many deer have you shot with various calibres 243, 6.5, 308, etc that the bullet has exited while using traditional soft points? My guess is more pass through than you recover within the carcass?

On that basis, what does it matter what you shoot the beast with, if you've got a safe backstop and meet the minimum legal requirements? A safe backstop being relevant from 22lr right through to 50bmg?

I personally don't see the need for a .270win or 308 for Roe, but plenty of folk do it......

I'm so sick of the lack of standardisation across the country - it's bad enough that here in the People's Republic of Sturgeonistan we don't have standardisation across Police Scotland (aka Nicola's Private Army), but we get different answers/opinions from different FEOs operating from the same licensing office.

 

I very much got the opinion from my FEO that whilst he wasn't keen on the idea of a .338LM rifle, any .30 calibre rifle will be fine, so as you say .30-338LM, .30 Lapua, .30 Norma or similar.

Can you shoot 338 at Cawdor? If you can, and there's a discipline you can shoot with it, surely that's good reason enough to get your foot in the door with it, so to speak? Having it for target is a start.....

Sounds like Lancs are more sensible than many. Do you also have it on your ticket for taget shooting and if so is there any primary range. The reason I ask is I'm trying to put together a few pointers with a view to possibly educating my FEO and perhaps getting a .38LM on my ticket in future. Grum** is in Scotland, he has a .338LM slot AFAIK, must compare notes with him.

I do have a 338 slot now, albeit I was knocked back for shooting over land. The FEO(Perth based, but answering to Dundee), was quite good about it, and with the agreement of BASC, did concede it'd be 'reasonable' to use over a considerably larger area of land. So.....a work in progress there.

For me the conditioning it for land lends itself to being able to do load development and whatnot without travelling for hours, or paying through the nose to do so. Would I take live prey with it? I'd probably give it a bash on the reds, but would I make a habbit of it? No. Would I push it to it's limits and try drop deer at 1000 plus? Not a chance.

With regards to the other conditions pertaining to my 338 slot, it's conditioned for use with the FCSA, but no specifics on what ranges. I have a coverall condition on my ticket that says;

'The firearm(s) and ammunition shall be used for target shooting, and only whilst a member of CVPC and FCSA, and only on ranges suitable for the safe use of that class of firearm and with adequate financial arrangements in place to meet any injury or damage claim.'

So....I guess I could use it on any range/club shoot that it is safe to do so?

My biggest limiting factor at the minute is my wallet though. Would anyone like to buy an arm and a leg, or perhaps a kidney?
