  1. With regards to the larger calibre, you may need the ground cleared even though you have an open ticket. Some forces (mine included) want a named bit of land associated with your "good reason" and that named bit of ground needs to be cleared to the appropriate calibre.

I've just been through renewal and have an open ticket. The first bit of land I put forward to cover all my rifles had only historically been cleared to .223. They were happy to come out and clear it to a higher calibre but that would have delayed things so I just sent another permission form to cover my larger calibres.

  2. Well it's been used, but it's really hard to find any evidence! Absolutely mint condition - any inspection welcome. Glass perfect, no ring marks. Everything there, including sunshade, BT adjustment tool, manual and cleaning cloth (never even opened). All the details are in the photos but it's the 1/4MOA version with 4WX-I+ illuminated reticle.

Probably the scope I'll always regret selling but I'm not doing any range work now and just too much for the stalking I do these days. £1,950 including insured, recorded delivery. Advertised elsewhere.

Appreciate it's a lot of scope and folk haven't huge amounts of disposable cash at the minute but I'm in no rush to sell so I'll keep popping in to bump now and then. If anyone wants to view it then I'm just on the Eastern edge of the Peak District.

  3. I'm sure there's a huge market for a decent mag for custom builds! I've got a lovely 6.5-284 built on a Bighorn action and the only thing I don't like is the big, clumsy, clattery AI mag. It feeds fine (thanks to a bit of fettling by Ronin) but it's just agricultural compared the rifle action. A decent magazine would make the world of difference.

I use Panasonic Enloops rechargeable and they will last 3weeks and still have about 20% charge it all depends on how cold it gets and how many pics and videos its collecting in a day or week,if i put feed out i can easily get 300pics in a couple days of squirrels rats and pheasants and even small birds and mice, but i normally check the camera twice a week , don't forget a good SD card i use 128GB Sandisc.

I couldn't get on with rechargeable batteries on trailcams (as much as I tried - including Eneloops which are supposed to be the best). They wouldn't last a fraction of the time a decent duracell would. Bought in decent size boxes off Amazon they aren't that pricey.

  5. Had the old Lee auto prime - basic, but it just worked. But the plastic got brittle and the lid snapped off primer tray so I bought the newer style.

Heap of crap. I’d never before had primers seated sideways but after 4 of these over about 50 cases (and subsequently having to dismantle the thing to try and get the case with protruding, sideways primer out of the case holder...) I chucked it in the bin in disgust

I kill game animals quickly and humanely. But the likes of prairiedogs and feral hogs I have little feeling for. I do my best but if it's a lethal hit I won't waste another bullet to put it out of a few moments of misery. ~Andrew

I’m not sure it was meant in the way it came across, as I’m sure many of us have shot deer which staggered and we knew were going down but didn’t immediately follow up with a second shot as it was unnecessary. However the wording of your post does suggest an unnecessary lack of compassion and is rather distasteful.

Ultimately you asked the question if you needed a Kestrel or not. If you feel the watch gives you everything you need for Strelock to give you an accurate firing solution then go for it!

My question wasn't do I need a Kestrel or not, but which one do I need (or did I even need a Kestrel and would a ten quid eBay special give me what I needed)? Just to be clear - the watch doesn't measure windspeed or wind direction so I have a fundemental gap in the data needed for Strelok.

In a roundabout sort of way I guess I've got my answers - the more expensive Kestrels give temp / pressure etc which I can get from my watch (albeit not the most integrated solution but fine for me for occasional use). So watch plus basic Kestrel seems to be my answer 👍

Be mindful of things like temp off watches. Often their thermometers are affected by your body heat of your wrist.

And I doubt wind speed AND direction on the watch will also be as accurate as an impeller in the wind.

But hey, give it a try and see.

Watch doesn't do windspeed, only temp, barromatric pressure and altitude. Temperature is hugely variable if on your wrist (it can be 10-15 degrees out during hard exercise) but seems quite accurate if you take it off and leave in the shade for 10 mins. Probably just as variable as a Kestrel which is in your pocket or left in the sun to be honest.

@Engiebenjie - it's a Garmin Fenix 5. I mainly use it for it's exercise tracking stuff, but it does give me a lot of the data I need for StrelokPro, which is the app I use. Just missing the windspeed / direction really (and no markers on most of the places I shoot, other than natural features such as trees and grass etc.

Fancier Kestrels do the ballistic solving for you.

But the most basic Kestrel is fine to input details into Strelock etc.Just make sure you get a Kestrel that gives you Temperature, Wind Speed,  Barometric pressure and Altitude.

I previously owned the Kestrel 2500 and used the details along with Lapua 6DOF solver and TRASOL solver and was able to easily make hits out to 1000m.

Cheers - I can get temperature, wind speed and barometric pressure off my watch, so theoretically I could do without that data on the wind meter, but understand it's much less faff to have it all in 1 place.

I talk every week with guys about load development and its clear that at least 50% dont really know what they are doing and even others who do still dont do it thoroughly enough to achieve the levels of accuracy and consistency they want.

    🙋‍♂️

Ahem - I'm definitely in that box!!

I had a Sako 243 years ago that I worked a load up with my brother (who'd done a bit of reloading, but not much). We basically bumbled into a combo that worked very easily and it shot .2" 5 shot groups. False sense of security - load development is clearly easy!! So when I had that rifle rebarrelled a good few years later, I was pretty clueless about working up a load - no access to Quickload, very limited access to a chrono - not really much idea about what I was doing and wasn't helped by the chap at the range I was using who sounded like he knew what he was doing, but in hindsight probably knew as much as me!

I spent a fortune on powders and bullets chasing an accurate combo, but without testing each combo thoroughly so looking back, I'm convinced I missed some accurate loads in there and dismissed a powder or a bullet too early.

yes, thanks, I've downloaded and read the Gov paper.  Busy thinking through how we might reopen one of our outdoor ranges

Yep, I can see this would be a tricky area. Stalking on your own is a bit clearer and much easier to comply with the rules. But if golf clubs can open then hopefully outdoor ranges can find a way through the rules 👍
