  1. Mat, where are you based?

There may be a local club offering small-bore GR or practical shooting matches/events that will get the old shooting juices flowing again.
It might get you back and it'll be cheaper even with the prices of 22LR these days.

  2. The rifle has gone so I have no need for this any more.

An Ase Utra Jet-Z Compact rated .30cal, so anything up to 300win mag according to their site. Threaded M18x1.

All steel construction and hard as nails. In excellent condition. Pics can be sent on request but a black mod is a black mod.

£200 ONO. These are £400 new.

    Blurb I found online:

PERFORMANCE: The jet-Z™ COMPACT suppressor reduces the weapon sound pressure level by 25 to 32 dB (depending on ammunition type, calibre, measurement location etc.), and significantly reduces recoil and muzzle flash. The result is a weapon firing full power ammunition, with a muzzle signature lower than that of an unsuppressed .22 rimfire rifle.

  3. Are you an NRA member?

If not, don't you have to be shooting as part of your club's booking?

Otherwise I don't think rocking up and shooting as a non-member is allowed. Non-NRA members have to pay an event membership to shoot the matches as it's not their club's booking.

I believe the RFD FAC is in one person's name. They can name other people who are employees at the RFD business as servants permitting them to be covered by the RFD FAC. That list is given to the police and recorded against the FAC. This means you could be sent with or collect restricted items for the RFD. You can be an employee of the RFD and not a servant of the RFD as well. For example working in the shop selling clothing etc or the person that keeps the books.

If a person or company provides a service to an RFD they would not be covered by the RFDs FAC and would need to be covered by their own FAC to be in possession of FAC restricted items. So a company that does cerakoting jobs for an RFD would need their own RFD FAC to take the guns away and do the job. But could do the job without an FAC if the parts are in the presence a servant of the RFD all of the time for example.

    That is my understanding anyway.

I think you have right in most ways.

There's no such thing as the RFD FAC just a Certificate of Registration as a Firearms Dealer.
Dealers can be a company or a person and police usually require anyone acting on behalf of the RFD to be notified to them. I have seen certificates of registration with servants' names listed in the conditions or (as with my own certificate) with a condition requiring the RFD to notify the relevant Chief Officer of Police with the name, address, DoB etc of any servants who are authorised to be in possession of the firearms and ammo... but their names etc are not listed in the conditions box.*

In your scenario, the painters would need to be dealers in their own right and not just FAC holders if they work on controlled components. Someone working in the RFD's shop (or other registered place of business) would be a servant and the relevant police force notified of their servant status. There are only a few special cases where a person can possess (touch) firearms or their components without an FAC, one of those is being an RFD (or the RFD's servant).

*Section 8 of the FA1968 refers. AFAIK neither is a legal requirement in itself but as with much of that which is firearms law it is a but fudged. If it is written as a condition on the Certificate of Registration (as in the same way with FAC/SGC) then it is an offence to fail to comply with it, so whatever way your certification department phrase it that is how you will need to do it.

  6. I believe air rifles are different and don't have to follow the same rules as section 1 firearms with regard to length. It might come down to how it is fired that makes it a pistol or a rifle and nothing to do with length.

ETA: When the length is mentioned in the Act it specifically exempts air weapons from the requirements (FA1968 S5.1(aba))

    Thanks Mattnal and Popsbengo.

I posted the question for opinions. Yes, I agree that my question may solicit responses from individuals that I have not spoken to or know, but it does open up a conversation not just for me but others that may have similar questions. Indeed, I don't know many of the people from this shooting forum as I don't know you, and naturally evaluate any advice provided carefully. However  there are individuals on this forum whose opinions I do value. As you say, it's my licence and my requirements.

I agree that honesty is the best policy, and felt uncomfortable with the initial responses, but I would have employed an honest policy with my firearms officer as I have always done. I wanted some different perspectives

    Regards

But only you have your reasons for wanting.
You asked for justification for the slot to give to your certification department but you should already know that.
Anyone else's justification would not be yours. Others will have their reasons for why they may want a different rifle, but each person has their own individual reasons and that is what should be stated on any application or variation.

I have had an FAC for some 15 years on an open basis. I have four slots, two of which are taken up, .308 and .260. The other two are for .223 and a .22 rimfire. They are currently vacant but I intend to purchase two rifles shortly so my allocation will have been used up.

If I want to purchase another .308 to be used for the same purposes as my existing  .308, and another calibre, say .270  how can I justify this to the Firearms Officer on my variation request.

You justify this with your reasons, pure and simple. Why do you want or need another .308? The answer to this is your reason and should be the one you use.

Don't be asking a complete stranger or the internet for a reason as you'll get their reason and not yours.

  9. I have a 15lb Thumler's tumbler and I think it has about 2kg/5lb of pins in it.

I don't bother drying the pins off after rinsing them clean, they are stainless and I have left them wet for several weeks and no rust at all. If I leave the lid off they will eventually dry out.

I've shot at at 2 day match once, I agree it's just too expensive. I like the challenge, so I'm currently pursuing .22 PRS type shoots instead with my CZ 457 instead.

This is my thoughts too. More ranges available as well. The NRL22 has a good format that travels well.

...the Feb comp, which is going to be around £110.

    ...

Unfortunately, as much as I'd like to try it, I am not sure I can justify the cost.

Similarly, I like the idea of it but the cost is a bit prohibitive.

How does this cost compare to the other PRS type shoots? Are there any of these around any more?

What would be the typical cost of rebarrelling .223 AR15 type straightpull with a good quality sporter profile barrel.  See there are off the shelf barrel options available in the UK, in the US it seems to be a DIY mechanical job, how do they adjust headspace and such like ?

Off-the-shelf barrels will only be in the common profiles probably a military profile or HBar or something else unsuitable to your needs. If you want something unique or different (as most shooters do) then it will need profiling to your requirements. Takes time and this adds to the cost.

If you do want one of the standard barrels fitting is not too hard as a DIY job as long as you can hold the barrel or receiver without distorting the receiver when tightening the barrel nut. Getting hold of one as far as FAC goes may be the biggest issue.

Headspace is usually done to a standard bolt and is set to the barrel by the barrel extension which should come with the barrel. They are designed to be fairly interchangeable so no real issues. If you have one cut it can be headspaced to your bolt but it'll not be much different to the standard chamber, unless you want it more specific for a particular chamber/cartridge/bullet fit (not usually a requirement on ARs generally).
