There's a big difference in my book between someone walking round with a gun taking a few rabbits and the odd muntjac or pheasant for the pot, and industrial scale slaughter by the lowlife who simply enjoy killing and are willing to pay in order to do so, "legally" or otherwise.

Rabbits, unlike mountain hares, are in the same league as grey squirrels, not a native species. Introduced during the Roman occupation, afaik.

As for the mountain hares: Protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. Priority Species under the UK Post-2010 Biodiversity Framework.

Ive set the rabbit boxes ,i expect to take between 200 and 300 rabbits tomorrow. This at the request of the farmers who need the grass .Wholesale slaughter Pete? Does it matter that i enjoy doing this or not? Mountain hare or the humble rabbit, when the numbers reach a level where you can kill these numbers this usually tells you that you should maybe think about lessening the numbers.

Actually, I don't give a s**t what the acreage was, whether or not they carry ticks, or are destined to end up on some restaurant menu.

I see a heap of dead hares, killed simply because they're presence was seen as an inconvenience to a money making enterprise. .

The illegal killing of raptors on grouse moors is another example.

Serious question Pete,if these were rabbits would you be as outraged?

Is the big rabbit classed as vermin?

    Pete

Legally classed as game, but how their numbers are controlled depends on the area,in wensleydale theyre not very common so arnt shot like the rabbit;which are in plague like numbers again. In other areas ive worked where the hare was numerous their numbers were controlled to keep visits from the 'caravan club' to a minimum so they were treated as 'vermin' .All depends on the ammount of hares in the area and the impact they have as to how theyre classified by the individual.

I sent mine back through SGC and it took around 6weeks. The objective lens was damaged and not covered through the warranty, but the charge was reasonable and well worth it.  They also replaced the turrets FOC.

SGC will deal with any issues regarding import. I’d heard some less than positive reviews about them, but in this case I found them hard to fault.

I think something internally has given up so hopefully it will be covered by the warranty.Time will tell though.

    Hi Paul,

I had a problem with an NXS I bought off here.....wouldn't hold more than a 4" group at 100yds.

Sent it via my RFD to SGC who checked it and said they had shot it and agreed it would only hold a 4" group but thought that was acceptable !!

A brief discussion between me/RFD/SGC and they sent it back to USA.......I had no receipt/proof of purchase, etc .

About 4 weeks later it returned from Nightforce looking like new (refurbished....not a new scope but hard to tell the difference) with a report saying they could find nothing wrong the scope (this is quite common apparently as Nightforce scopes are NEVER faulty;)). Once fitted and test fired, suddenly the outfit now shoots 1/2" groups at 100yds.

Send it back to NF they will sort it for sure 👍👍

    Regards, Rob.

Thats encouraging.I will be sending it to nightforce for certain.

I sent a s/h Nightforce back to Nightforce in America for repair.  Turned it around fairly quickly and it came back looking like new.  It then took me weeks to get it from Customs - without having to pay VAT and import duty.  Nightmare of an outfit to deal with!  Eventually I got professional help (thanks Toni) and the scope was released to me.

Its encouraging that you got a good conclusion eventually.Could i ask whether you sent it back via a distributer or on your own?

If you sent it back yourself, did you contact nightforce first?

    What's wrong with it?

It wont track reliably. If you put on 4 clicks at 100 yards it may move 6 inch up and 2 inch right. It will hold a group though. However if i then move 4 clicks down it will move randomly.Almost like each click has a random value.

  8. I swapped scopes with a chap and it soon became obvious why he wanted to swap.Anyhow the scope ive been lumbered with,an nxs, needs to go back for warranty work.Anyone had any experience doing this bearing in mind i have no receipt. Thanks in advance.

Yep absolutely loving it , no natural predators other than me with the 17 hmr  doing my bit to help the farmers.        Funny how things turn out . Friend with a lab with skin problems is happy with rabbits for the wolf diet  , and got some mates wanting natural food for themselves and a few reptile keepers .

    Happy days indeed

Funny how people can be squemish about eating rabbit since myxy ,nice meat if cooked properly.

Just got a new place to shoot overrun with rabbits al because gamekeepers shoot all the foxes on the grouse moor so no natural balance now  . Sheep farmers struggle to live with holes everywhere and rabbits eating the grass

    Doent sound like conservation

Sounds like theyre doing a good job of conserveing grouse numbers which is their job i.e. what theyre being paid to do.You are now fortunate enough to have obtained a new peice of ground to shoot over on the strength of this.well done.

70% but my Dad always told me you need to put 4 down for every 1 you want to shoot. Returns are better if you have shoots next to you and everyone does there but,

If youre returning 70% on released birds you need to carry on doing whatever it is your doing .70% return is pretty special.

  12. Look, there are commercial pheasant shoots that make a good profit, usually the bigger shoots, shooting big bags.Theres a lot of smaller commercial shoots which do run on tight margins.Without farm payments/subsidies etc they would not exist.Im lucky in that for the last 22 years my employer had no financial worries,as long as the estate didnt run in the red he was happy.I know plenty of owners who run their estate on the same basis. In effect they shoot their personal/family days at no cost, paid for by the let days.

How many beaters do you have? How much do you pay them....what do you give them for lunch? 200 birds at £45 a bird. I am available next season to come and beat for you.

Perhaps you need to factor in keepers wages,housing,4x4s ,corn prices, diesel prices, rent if applicable, cover crops, beaters wages ,well im sure you get the idea. There really isnt a huge profit margin you know. For most shoot owners its a labour of love. They do it because they enjoy it.Theres nothing wrong with doing something because you enjoy it.

The management of grouse moors IS a problem.  Some wild species benefit to an extent but many don't.  The illegal killing of raptors still happens too, as successful prosecutions from time to time confirm.

Very few prosecutions in fairness.Do you think your friend packham should be prosecuted for his persecution of kestrels?

If you read what you will find on the link I posted (which you clearly haven't), then you will see that the timing has nothing to do with Chris Pakham and everything to do with a largely incompetent government organisation.

I'm done with you.  You have no interest in the facts so what's the point.

I had already read it earlier in the week thanks.Didnt feel the urge to read it again.
