  1. I found that interesting - certainly doesn't make me feel too bad about the results I get down the field. I would love see exactly the same test/conditions at 100 yards. Also quite surprised to see, even with a good quality match rifle, shot under perfect conditions, with about the best ammunition you can buy, some of the batches and groups were incapable of holding the 10 ring.

  2. I wouldn't take the zero range as verbatim either. If I try and show a 600 zero with 5.56, the sights are actually set for 400, don't ask me why, but those zero targets are hardly scientific.

I think those zero cards really are quite scientific - that's why the range is 71 feet 7 inches.

The cards are really designed for Nato 7.62 RG ammunition, either 164gn or 155gn at 2,700 fps or what ever the standard spec is.

They can also supply a zero card for the Nato 5.56 round if you ask. However, only accurate if you are shooting the right ammunition at the right velocity with the standard scope height.

  3. If you get the flow of movement right, there's very little time wasted. With a basic powder measure throwing around a grain light and a slow trickle there's always a charge waiting by the time you have picked up a bullet and seated it. I run at about 2.5 - 3 completed rounds a minute.

I originally designed the Targetmaster in the 1980's to weigh very light charges (1.5 grains) for .32 competition pistol shooting.

  4. Were there any adverts for Eley ammo in the same issue, Scott? ;-)

I wish someone had the resources to conduct a statistically valid, adequately powered study to answer questions like "what is the best .22LR subsonic ammo?" Obviously, the results would not be transferable to every rifle, so you'd need to test a selection of guns...

Starts to become a major undertaking.

I always think this is one of the best .22 ammunition tests carried out.

  5. It was such a cracking morning earlier today I thought I would shoot a few groups with a new batch of Eley sub HP's. Quite pleased with the results, shot with my Sako Finnfire from the ground with a bipod at 68 yards, cheap Fox 2.5-10x50 scope. 6 x 5 shot groups, 30 consecutive shots, average .9 moa.

A couple of good groups at .5moa, just disappointing they aren't all like that.

  6. Here's a sample through my out-of- the-box Sako Finnfire Varmint, 23" barrel, SAK mod, off the bench at 55m using a bipod and back bag:

Good to see some real life groups rather than "internet" groups.

Here's a short video I made comparing 6 different batches of .22lr ammunition, 3 solids and 3 HP's all subsonic. Shot at 65 yards in windy conditions, 30 consecutive shots, all shots would have hit a golf ball. As expected really, Eley Tenex gave the best group. Not a scientific test I know but it helped me weed out the no hopers.

  7. Looks like a juvenile as the leangth of his tale is short . And the definition of colour in his feathers arnt quite there yet , well he won't be getting anymore defined in plumage now anyway  This is interesting tho , i remember a few years back seeing an all black 100% magpie on the same bit of ground every morning for about a month , then he went missing ! I think some one stole my idea - took it with an air rifle and sent it to the taxidermist ! Thats what id of done if id managed to get it !

I bet John Darling would of too ;) RIP

Here's another shot of him - nearly all black.

  8. Ahh! You mean like this :

These are great fun to shoot, especially at the longer ranges. I recently contacted Eley direct and they told me they no longer make them and have no plans to do so.

If you do find an old box you might be disappointed, I find the have quite a short shelf life. I horded a couple of boxes for around 5-7 years and didn't work at all when I tried them recently.

They are still made by other companies abroad but not seen any here other than the Eley ones (I have seen old military .22's but again didn't trace at all)
